Magic: The Gathering made quite a splash when it made its way back to the PC back in 2009 with Duels of the Planeswalkers, and with its sports-style yearly release schedule, it has always been keen to try new things. And while free-to-play isn’t new to gaming these days, it will be new to Wizards of the Coast when they implement it in their next Magic: The Gathering game.

Yes, the popular card game is going free-to-play with its next release, the newly announced Magic Duels: Origins. The game will feature both single player and multiplayer modes – with support for Two-Headed Giant mode – plus a new quest system for both individual and commnunity achievements, as well as, apparently, ’100% earnable content’. As Rock, Paper, Shotgun points out, this doesn’t seem to square with last year’s purchasable cards contributing to both your Magic 2015 and Magic Online collection, so it will be interesting to see how this goes.

Magic Duels: Origins will also feature an improved Deck Builder, thank goodness, and ironically, the first ever playable Planeswalker cards. Embedded below you can see the announcement trailer for Magic Duels: Origins, which will be available on PC, Xbox One and iPads this July, with a PlayStation 4 version following shortly after.
