[02/02] FFXIV's Gold Saucer: Triple Triad & Chocobo racing details, costumes and rewards revealed

24 February hails the arrival of the eagerly awaited Patch 2.51. It won't bring anything major in terms of story and new raid challenges, but it will bring what everyone has been waiting over a year for: FFXIV's own Gold Saucer. To differentiate it from FFVII's 17-year old Gold Saucer, this Gold Saucer is referred to as the Manderville Gold Saucer, so you can be sure to expect a tonne of wacky personality emanating from the place if its supposed patriarch is presumably a member of the Manderville family.

In a recent Letter from the Producer Live, a stream was shown detailing what you can expect in terms of minigames and rewards from the Manderville Gold Saucer.

1) Triple Triad

"All Open" will be the basic rule set for Triple Triad. Bear in mind there will be further advanced rules that a challenger can dictate the terms of and can affect the way matches play out.

  • Random: No matter which deck you select, cards will be randomly picked from the cards you own.

  • Same: If the numbers of two or more cards match the numbers on the adjacent sides of the card you play, you will gain control of every matching card.

As expected, players can challenge each other if you're not questing or dungeon running. It is up to the challenger to dictate the terms and rules of the match. If anyone is new to Triple Triad, you can practise against certain NPCs in Eorzea. Succeed, and you can gain fancy new cards from their lifeless, virtual husks.

80 cards will be available to begin with. If you want to collect them all, there are a number of ways to go about it. Winning against NPCs as mentioned is one such method. Another is to hope they drop from dungeons and certain other duties. Additionally, you can purchase boosters with Gold Saucer coins (attained through Gil, not via the MogShop with real money).

2) Chocobo Racing

No Gold Saucer is complete without this FFVII game. Players who have already trained and raised their Chocobos will be at home for what is required for Chocobo Racing. Instead of calling your gallant bird to battle to gain EXP, your Chocobo attains EXP by racing. As its rank increases, so does its attributes and it may even learn new abilities. Hopefully the blue shell ability isn't one of them.

Feeding your Chocobo will also increase its attributes. If you feel your steed has finished its racing career, you can retire it and have it breed with another Chocobo. The offspring can inherit very desirable traits from the parents and you can slowly create your own Chocobo master race! Master...race...pun might have been intended.

3) Other events

So what else is there and was shown in the stream?

Well, there's Monster Toss, the Moogle's Paw, Cuff-a-Cur and Crystal Tower Striker. These are designed to be simple to play, and engaging enough to warrant repeated plays. While they don't yield much in the way of tangible rewards, they are a fun pastime to be had if say, you're waiting in duty finder for a party.

There’s also a special Cactuar lottery system, called the “Cactpot”. This is a lottery feature, where players can purchase a “Jumbo Cactpot” lottery ticket that is limited to one a week, and a “Mini Cactpot” that is a lottery ticket limited to one purchase per day.

4) Rewards

Setzer Gabbiani fans, rejoice. The Blackjack owner from FFVI will have his outfit available as a reward.

If you don't fancy dressing up as the gambler, there are at least a couple of mounts that can be collected. There's Fenrir, a familiar face for players who have farmed Snowcloak. There's also an Adamantoise, which is hilariously tiny and harmless next to something like the Adamantoise from FFXIII.

5) New veteran rewards

If you've lived in Eorzea since launch and you're thinking of renewing your subscription yet again at the 720-day mark, you get the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Cloud costume. Yes, even the women. Sorry, no Aerith or Tifa ones.

Hahaha, that's so cool. I'm no where near that 720 days mark, but the Cloud custome is pretty cool. Although, ugh, can you imagine how many Clud Stryfe people there will be running around.

XoXxoOXxSephiroth19999xoXOntruelove forever, though.

The chocobo racing and gold saucer are something I'm looking forward to, though. :D

Triple Triad and Gold Saucer...been waiting for it for some time now. I'll most likely sub again a week before its release. Since I'm not a fan of any dungeons after the main scenario story (well maybe except for Ultima's Bane and a few hard mode dungeons) I'll be spending most of my time in the casino and raising my chocobo.

Looks like I finally might get to ride my companion, Timmy the Turtle! :argor:

This does all look very interesting. Except for the Cloud costumes because we all know that once they are released you'll find hundreds of Cloud look-a-likes running about instead of developing their own characters.

Well seems if I renew now I can finally get my wolf back, of course probably need to get the ps3 version first since my pc runs it at a lousy 5 fps for some reason. But I will love being able to ride around on Fenrir now, but only if they can make him a useable egi then I would be ecstatic as far as my smn role goes.

Woke up this morning to the glorious 1.3GB patch. Patch notes here.

Glad to see more uses for culinary that don't include CP buffs.

Additionally, I didn't realize this patch would bump up the zodiac weapon ilevel again. The more you know~

Bar that, can anyone confirm if private races are a thing? That would be a stellar way to pass time if you don't feel up for the entire deal.
