Both Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen and Dragon Quest VIII: The Journey of the Cursed King (how well it runs on mobile is another matter) are on mobile platforms, and it seems more will follow from Square-Enix's back catalogue. The next to make its migration to your iPhone is set to be the original Dragon Quest - or Dragon Warrior for American veterans - with a generous revamp.
During a translated interview with executive producer Yuu Miyake and mobile producer Noriyoshi Fujimoto at PAX Prime, the latter stated:
"We are planning to release in the first part of September the first Dragon Quest...we're hoping to release [Dragon Quest] 2 and 3 in order in a period of two or three months, in a short span. We're planning to release subsequent numbered [games] — whatever is left — we hope to release that in order as well."
Miyake added that they dispensed with releasing the games in a logical numbered order and opted to begin with Dragon Quest VIII, because it was the most complicated to bring to mobile devices. To make that possible, the team endured "a lot of testing" to find out the best way to optimise the interface and controls for touchscreen input.
"We've always wanted to have [Dragon Quest] available on the most popular console or gaming machine available at the time," Miyake said. "If you look at the modern gaming scape, a lot of people play games on the mobile platform. That's why we felt Dragon Quest would be appropriate to bring to that very popular game device, [mobile]."
Currently, there exist no plans to release the 3DS remake of Dragon Quest VII outside of Japan, nor does it seem the MMORPG Dragon Quest X will make a similar crossing either. Nor will Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland. It is a great time to be a fan of Dragon Quest!
