Well they did explain that when a sorceress is about to die she has to give her powers to another woman of any age. The body "acts" on its own until the powers find a new vessel. When the sorceress dies or takes a killing blow her sorceress powers force her body to transmit the powers to someone else. Hyne is basically the god that created the world and thats all you need to know about him in FF8. And they do tell you that in the game. Hyne the creator of the world split his power into two or something like that. Half of his power is equivalent to the sorceress' powers

The only thing I agree on is the ultimecia thingy but it is not all bad since it leaves it up to your own interpretation, imagination! Its certainly a bad point but there are bright sides to it.

They don't go into detail regarding the transfer of power, if they do I don't remember. They never explain Hyne, we find out about him in the Ultimania which never hits the US.

Hmm. Im pretty sure that the crazy doctor in Esthar explains you all that regarding Hyne and the transfer of power. Sure it is kind of vague but it is all we need to understand the concepts. On the other hand I cant say the same thing about ultimecia.

Yes I'm pretty sure you learn a lot of that history stuff in Esthar. And while it's vague it's a totally different thing than in XIII when there's often not even vague mentions of things, a lot of important stuff you'd never know at all unless you continually read the datalog. All the stuff needed to understand the story was given in game in VIII the same can't be said for XIII you need to read the datalog to understand what's going on.

This is going off-topic. Just a reminder =)

I'm playing it now and I'm considering quitting. The battle system is boring, the storyline is boring, the characters are annoying, the soundtrack sucks. There is nothing in this game to like.

Agreed on all counts. But i feel the characters are more annoying than boring. I highly recommend you don't give it a chance. I gave ti a chance 3 times, and the third time i wasn't even HALF WAY!

I didn't see much in this game asides from the glitzy graphics tbh...so if you tried it once and gave up on it I don't see why a second try would be any different. There's no use forcing yourself to go out and like it for a "second chance's sake" or etc... If you are that impartial towards it I'd sell it if you can and use the money towards something else you'd rather play. There's many other games out there that I'm sure you'd be able to get into that you would like a whole lot more. This fall is proving to be a pretty decent fall for new game releases :ryan:

Why waste your time forcing yourself to like something just because someone else thinks you should? :lew:

On my first play through I disliked this game and actually did not even finish it.

I had to give it a complete start over and second chance. I defintly recommend you do so. It might be a straight forward linear game but the story itself is enjoyable. Plus the side missions are what really make the game, in my opinion.

I did end up giving it a second chance and sadly I still didn't like it. I didn't hate the story or characters as much the second time but it bored me completely. I couldn't finish it and everything else I still hated (linearity, level progression, battles). A good thing though, I got XIII-2 and absolutely loved it.

only if you don't mind how long the battles take

i wanted to try to give it a second chance, but i must have erased all of my FFXIII saves. Then I remembered how long the battles took and decided I didn't want to play the game anymore.

I wouldn't mind how long they took if there was anything challenging about the fights. I want to try it again someday, but I feel like that is quite a ways off. Definitely not looking forward to downloading 10hrs of porn or tv shows/movies and spamming auto battle.

I started playing this game when it first came out and I got maybe 2/3rds of the way through it before I stopped playing and went off to play CoD: Modern Warfare 2 for the next year. haha

I recently picked it up again in June of 2012 and I'm glad I did. my girlfriend was in Europe for 3 weeks so I had time to pop it in and try to complete it with some free time on my hands. I started from scratch, right from the opening scene, and usually that's tough for me because I hate wasting time on something I've already seen or gone through once. It does pick up toward the end, it just took me a bit to actually get into the story-line and I was stuck on a boss that kept bogging me down so I got discouraged quick.

Overall I'm glad I gave it a second chance and have now moved onto FFXIII-2. These def arent close to my favorite games in the series, but I'm glad I can check them off the list.

if you can go through over twenty hours without wanting to kill the game for its horrible story, constantt necessity to read reports that take over fifteen minutes to understand, and overall incredibly tedious gameplay that provides you no strategy, and no room for any freedom whatsoever. then go ahead.

I'm giving it re-try right now. Minds think alike huh ? Though to be honest I sorta of almost so far feel the same that I did way back in 2010 ? I still hate Snow and Lightning and have a soft spot towards Hope even though most of the people who play this game think that he's one of the most awful characters ever created...

The chapter thing and how most things are explained via guidebook annoy me too. Why aren't they explained via the game like it should be ?
:thehell:

Though I am enjoying Hope and Snow's relationship. They're like brothers. Snow is that older brother that is trying to understand is younger brother; but the younger brother is annoyed with him; but in the end they sort of begin to understand each other. It's like a gem storyline and development hiding throughout alot of mess.

Same with Vanille and Sazh. But a more of a Father and Daughter relationship.
:hmmm:

FF XIII to me feels like a Guilty Pleasure. It's filled with cheese. You either enjoy it, or you secretly enjoy the cheesy drama like dialogue, cheesy story and just cheesy everything.
I like your point, with the last part. "guilty pleasure, cheese, etc." I love it for all those reasons. Plus, I formed bonds with most of the characters:) I hope you managed to find the soul of the game during your retrial.
