      FFX or VIII?

I'm just about to finish FFXII, it'll be the first time I've finished it since my first time playing I never actually got to the end. Problem is though, what to play next - I really want to play X or VIII next, I've played both numerous times, both are my favourites of the series, but I just can't make up my mind. I keep seeing things posted about each game that makes me think I want to play one of them but then I'll see things about the other that I want to play as well. So my question is this: which would you choose and why? Hopefully when I see the answers I'll be able to make up my mind.

Alright. For a better persuasion I need to know which of the games you played the most recently and when did you last play them because they are also 2 of my favourite games

Do you want a convoluted storyline/whine fest or a whine fest with a turn based Soccer punching minigame?

Well most recently I played X, I only went half way through though because I got a new game (Catherine) and got distracted I don't want to go back to that save though, if I decide to play X I'll start a new game. Before X the last game I played was 8, like immediately before there's not much of a difference as far as time frame goes.

Hmm okay.. So I will just say a few things w/o really giving you a definite answer:
      Final Fantasy 8:
      - Easy
      - The minigame is quite good: Triple Triad but personally I dont like it.
      - A story that connects two different timelines in a very subtle way. Even little things between the 2 timelines are connected such as the Seifer Thingy that I recently discovered.
      - A nice love story, it has crazy twists that I love and you too probably.
      - Awesome looking weapons, not too time consuming to perfect and 100% complete.
      - I like how Squall develops and his back story. Also the game isnt as slow as X to pick up (imo).
      - Its fun to play the game as with a Rinoa-Ultimecia perspective or simply using your imagination to give Ultimecia more depth.. What could have driven her into that state.Who would want eternal nothingness alone .. Wondering why is really cool and trying to come up with character background for her.
      - Also gotta love Renzokuken (my favourite limit break in the series)
      - Amazing variety of summons, they have long animations but they are my favourite summons in the series!
      - It has laguna and the overall plot is superior imo than the one of 10. The ending can also make me cry despite being happy so it doesnt fall back on X's.Although the way the plot was executed was worse than X's. In order to fully appreciate the wonders of FF8 story you have got to think about how everything comes together and sometimes use your imagination. I dont know how to explain this point very well but I guess the game itself doesnt tell you everything, you have to figure out some things on your own.. The game tells you but it is very subtle. Well just forget this if you are confused or if I wasnt clear enough myself.

      Final Fantasy 10:
      - A bad protagonist at first that in the end evolves into something I love .
      - Better music than FF8 imo although the battle/boss music is not as good as in 8.
      - An emotional and endearing story with great plot twists.
      - Philosofical perspectives in the way people perceive religion(there are different perspectives regarding the matter)
      - Awesome characters and most of them develop pretty well.
      - A lot of time consuming, difficult and sometimes annoying side content but very fullfilling in the end.
      - Its harder and the gameplay has more depth.
      - Better storytelling overall
      - Better character interaction and up to par love story.
      - Sense of epic adventure near the end of the game (when you reach Zanarkand). Its sad to end the game because its so good!

Both games have very interesting themes to explore its really up to you! Hope I was of some help

Play FFVIII, then hold off until FFX is re-released with HD graphics. That is probably what I'll end up doing.
Someday, something else might be here, in the meantime...

I just wrote out a long essay while FFX is good and everything I prefer and recommend FF VIII more because in a very unpopular opinion FF VIII has better characters, a better romance love story and a Junction System that is complexed but is challenging.... but I pressed the wrong button and lost everything...

Play FF8 then play FF10 both are good but FF8 has a better love story.

It depends on whether you plan to buy FFX HD too! If you're going to buy the game, play FFVIII so that FFX HD feels more new.

If you're not planning to buy FFX HD, it's a more difficult decision, since I absolutely adore both!

Both have a fantastic story and love story, though X's is perhaps more epic. I do feel the characters in X have a better back story than those in VIII. They feel more developed and real, somehow. Furthermore, the music in X is a fraction better and X has one of the catchiest battle themes in gaming history.

I suppose you could also look at it like this.
      • VIII's battle system vs. the fantastic strategic, turn-based system in X!
      • A semi-realistic setting (VIII) vs. a magical, vibrant and colourful setting (X).
      • The world map (VIII) vs. a more linear path (X).
      • Grainy FMVs, but with realistic tones vs. more developed FMVs with vibrant tones.
      • Rinoa and Squall's dance/Ragnorok vs. the Spring FMV.
      • Text (VIII) vs. reasonable voice acting (X).
      • Edea and Seifer (VIII) vs. Seymour Silly Guado! *rages* (I love Edea and detest Seymour. )

I found VIII's battle system and character upgrading/customization to be the biggest ultimate pain in the ass of the entire series, but apart from that ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING else about Final Fantasy VIII is breathtakingly amazing. I'd almost say it has the best story, and really technologically advanced cutscenes. I'd say this is one of the most memorable games to me. The characters are really great and it truly has some epic and intense moments. It's truly an action-packed game that will punch you in the face with great plot twists.

I think Final Fantasy X is much more friendly for newcomers to the series, so in short, it's linear and a little more straightforward when it comes to character upgrading. Just follow a walkthrough at times, (you should do that for both, anyway) and make sure to keep an eye on the sphere grid so you don't make any dumb decisions. Final Fantasy X probably has the best ending EVER, (in my honest opinion) that I've ever seen in a videogame, and can bring tears to your eyes on multiple occasions. It features a great storyline and a very well-crafted world that you will get absorbed into. The battle system honestly gets fun, if you're into turn-based battle systems like me If you wish to return to Final Fantasy X, I'd recommend waiting for the HD remaster. It'll look tons better and will add to the experience. We're probably so close to that coming out, that there's no real point in playing the game NOW with downgraded graphics.

You should obviously play BOTH, but not at the same time, of course. I'd say they equal out.
Currently working on as hard as I can:
Xenosaga Episode III: Also Sprach Zarathustra - PS2
      Bioshock: Infinite - PS3

      The Longest Journey - PC
      Mass Effect - PS3

      Proud of completing (FF games):
      Final Fantasy I - March 13, 2008 (GBA)

Crisis Core: FFVII - December 5, 2010 (PSP)
Final Fantasy VII - November 22, 2007 (PC)
Final Fantasy VIII - January 15, 2010 (PSX)
      Final Fantasy X - July 1, 2011 (PS2)

      Final Fantasy XII - June 2, 2012 (PS2)
      Final Fantasy XIII - April 2, 2010 (PS3)

VIII is one of my least favorite in the series. While FFX is my favorite in the series.

You can pretty much guess which one I'm gonna suggest.

.......play FFVIII first. I know I want to say FFX because it's my favorite, and I was going to suggest X first, but kryceks brought up a suggestion I agree with: wait to play FFX in HD. I have a feeling it will be more amazing to see the graphics in stunning HD and all that. So, play VIII now and then X.
