This week director Tetsuya Nomura talked to Famitsu magazine about Final Fantasy Versus XIII, giving a few details about its visual development. Unfortunately no new images were released to the public; according to Nomura, Square Enix would rather not draw too much attention away from their other upcoming Final Fantasy titles, Final Fantasy Type-0 and Final Fantasy XIII-2.

Versus XIII will make use of both pre-rendered movies and real-time cutscenes, but the exciting news here is that the player will retain control during all game-generated cutscenes. "When I'm playing a game, I tend to skip most of the cutscenes because I want to get on with playing. I'm sure there are other players like that," Nomura says. "We wanted to make immersion in game events natural, and minimize interruptions to gameplay."

Versus XIII will therefore make use of an entirely new system, something more natural than the "game-like" presentation we're used to. "There are some elements that change depending on the setting. It's difficult to explain, but in some ways it's more similar to an FPS than an RPG." As far as Nomura knows this new system is something that hasn't been done anywhere else, so he's keeping the rest of the details a secret for now.

The staff has also been working hard to minimize the visual differences between pre-rendered and game-generated cutscenes by homogenizing the lower- and higher-quality character models. Nomura says that the only significant difference will be seen in the characters' hair. Other improvements to cutscenes will include more realistic conversations; voice actors have been recording their lines together so that characters will sometimes talk over each other, and laugh together more naturally.

When Famitsu asked for clarification about Nomura's previous comments that Versus XIII would take action gameplay elements from the Kingdom Hearts series, he emphasized that Versus XIII is still its own game. "Versus XIII, Type-0 and Kingdom Hearts 3D will all have action elements, but each has a different game design direction." While Kingdom Hearts 3D will have a bigger emphasis on action, and Type-0 will include battlefield tactics in the vein of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and The 3rd Birthday, the battles of Versus XIII will include more variety and change according to game circumstances.

Finally, members of Famitsu staff were allowed a sneak preview of three screenshots from the game, and were stunned by what they saw. Some significant changes have been made since Versus XIII was last shown to the public. According to Nomura, game movie director Takeshi Nozue applied his expertise with pre-rendered movies in order to add more realistic lighting to the game-generated cutscenes. Judging by Famitsu's reactions, the effects are remarkable: the staff couldn't believe the images were generated in real time. In response to comments that the screenshots look like real photos, Nomura added that players who want to savor the in-game scenery will actually be able to take photos with protagonist Noctis' smartphone.

We can't wait to see all this for ourselves, but it seems the new visuals aren't quite ready for public consumption. Nomura apologizes sincerely to his fans for making them wait so long for details, but says he hopes to reveal some better information with his next announcement.

Something to remind y'all about their ambitions about this game.
We'll see when, how and what they implemented and what not eventually.
