Dragon Quest X “communication” screens are depressingly ridiculous

Screens of online communication in Dragon Quest X, Square’s upcoming Wii and Wii U MMO, have confirmed this morning that getting out of bed to report on stuff like this is the video gaming equivalent of crying, alone, into a Cadbury’s “Heritage” biscuit barrel.

Army Corps of Hell can support up to 200 goblins on Vita’s screen at once

Square has released another batch of screenshots for Army Corps of Hell. The Vita title, to be released around the system’s launch, will contain four-player co-op where each player controls his or her very own demon king and up to 50 goblins at a time. The game can, if you wish, support up to 200 goblins on screen at once casting spells and “stabbing monsters with tiny swords on the battlefield,” according to Siliconera. In single-player mode, the player can command up to 100 goblins. Awesome. Check out the screens below.

Final Fantasy XIII-3 not on the cards despite domain registration

Speaking in a podcast, Square Enix public relations officer Akio Ofuji has explained a Final Fantasy XIII-3 domain registration as a defensive measure. According to Andriasang‘s translation, the registration was made by the US office, and Japanese staff weren’t aware about it until the story was picked up by press. Final Fantasy XIII-2 is due in Japan this month, with a Western release early next year on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

According to the project’s website, the demo is supposed to showcase real-time 3D environments and free camera control, and as such, doesn’t feature true cinematics, battle, or interaction.
A video of it in action includes a nice little nod to one of the many persistant rumours of secrets which dogged the game for years; that players who spent long enough in the very first area of the game would have an encounter with Zack. Pity it’s not long enough to pack in a few other treasured myths, like Aeris’s resurrection.
Square Enix has been cagey on the subject of an official remake of the 1997 RPG, citing the game’s complicated environments as incompatible with current generation graphics development.
You can grab a copy of the demo for Windows here. Have a good look before Square shots it down. Thanks, Miladesn.

Square files trademark for Gunslinger Stratus

Square Enix has filed a trademark in Japan for a title called Gunslinger Stratus. A search through the USPTO found no trace of it, but that doesn’t mean anything just yet. The trademark, dug up by Andriasang, doesn’t really state much, but we’re betting it’s one of the “two to three” new IPs the firm said it’s working on. Last week, the firm listed recruitment ads for a new action RPG for PS3 and Vita, as well as another action-RPG in development, which featured teaser artwork. We’ll send a mail, but we don’t expect Square to give up any secrets just yet.

Disappointment after disappointment.

Yes, yes I agree. Square-Enix definitely disappointed in this line up, especially given 4 of the 6 games mentioned haven't been announced. Seriously, a game that doesn't have a name must be disappointing to such an extent that disappointment itself is disappointed. How dare Square-Enix not expect us to be disappointed with this disappointing list of disappointing games.

2 to 3 games based on 1 ip? So that means sequals already? Or a line of games on different platforms a la FFXIII Crystallis...?

Unreal Engined Action RPG with online capabilities?

You have to admit Ryan SE has all these plans and they all taste so western...
And we all know so far SE have/has no idea how the West work.

Wahaaa..

Given Square Enix's recent performance, I'd question the wisdom of their ambition. But then, given the sheer volume of games they've announced recently, it's about bloody time they actually RELEASED some of them, so I'm not going to complain...about this. No doubt I'll find some excuse to moan about them all on an individual basis.

Those games that have been announced don't look particularly impressive to me, although it is far too early to tell with some of them. But the initial first impressions with some - for example, the Western Unreal Engine one - aren't really positive, because they're clearly not focusing on substance over form, if that's the first thing they're announcing. It's depressing, but not surprising, and I've come to expect it. So time will tell, I suppose. Too early to be disappointed outright, but they're not exactly inspiring any optimism.

With Final Fantasy XIII-2 arriving in the west early next year, Johnny Cullen talks to producer Yoshinori Kitase on how Square picked up the pace and the lessons learnt from FFXIII.

[Major FFXIII spoilers follow]
Final Fantasy XIII-2

ffxiii-2.jpg

Sequel to Final Fantasy XIII, which launched in March 2010 as the first core entry in the long-running franchise to grace HD consoles.
The second numbered sequel to a core Final Fantasy release after 2003′s Final Fantasy X-2.
While Lighting is playable in some sections throughout the game, main leads this time will be her sister Serah and new character Noel.
Developed alongside long-in-the-making Final Fantasy Versus XIII and PSP’s Final Fantasy Type-0.

Final Fantasy XIII released in March 2010 to strong criticism, particularly of its linearity and lack of the town hubs found in other series titles. At first, Square Enix creatives defended the design decisions. Director Motomu Toriyama said that town hubs were “impossible to do on an HD console – it was too much work.” Toriyama said in an E3 interview this year that development on towns similar to those in FFVII-IX were “boring.”
But you’ve got to hand it to producer Yoshinori Kitase. He, along with Toriyama and the rest of the development team, are listening to the fans. Final Fantasy XIII-2 has apparently not only fixed faults in the vanilla version, but have taken feedback into direct consideration, something he says will heighten the enjoyment the player will get from the sequel.
“The overall theme for the development of FFXIII-2 was to address all of the points that were criticised in FFXIII and the most complained about aspect was the linear story progression,” Kitase tells VG247.
“The original idea for FFXIII was to make it very much a story-driven experience with the game itself progressing through the narrative, and this led to a linear design. For FFXIII-2 we changed to a player-driven concept where the story progresses through the player making different choices and exploring different situations.
“We believe that these alterations have greatly deepened and enhanced the enjoyment to be had from the gameplay.”
But feedback from fans wasn’t just enough. This time, “user testing” was key to design development.
“There were many things that we learned and took on board from the development of FFXIII, and we tried out a completely new development process for FFXIII-2. Among the things we felt we could improve upon, one of the most important was user testing. With FFXIII-2 we made sure to include this in the design process from the very start.
“By continuously acquiring objective feedback on the game from the user’s perspective we were able to perfect the gameplay and increase the overall quality of the finished title.”
Final Fantasy XIII put players in control of ex-soldier Lightning, as well as Snow, Vanille and others. For XIII-2, while Lightning still remains crucial to the story, Square has switched it up. Serah, Lightning’s sister and the fiancee of Snow, is now head honcho, having been a pivotal plot point in the last game. Lightning and Snow – plus Sazh, Vanille, Fang and Hope – attempted to save the worlds of Cocoon and Pulse, along with the crystallised Serah, as part of their “Focus” after unintentionally becoming l’Cie.
“There were many things that we learned and took on board from the development of FFXIII and we tried out a completely new development process for FFXIII-2. Among the things we felt we could improve upon, one of the most important was user testing. With FFXIII-2 we made sure to include this in the design process from the very start.”
XIII-2 kicks off right after the events of XIII. Cocoon and Pulse were saved by the actions of Vanille and Fang and all is right in the world – but Lightning, having been just reunited with her sister, is somehow spirited away from her time to Valhalla, where the game’s first action set-piece takes place.
With her disappearance, everyone has assumed her dead – except her sister. A year on from Lightning’s vanishing act, after an attack on her home town by monsters, Serah comes across a young boy called Noel who claims he can bring her to his sister by travelling through space and time.
This is achieved by a new gameplay system known as the Historia Crux. Using it will unlock multiple endings, according to Kitase, as well as allow a return to areas previously visited in the game.
“The player will be able to carry out time travel by freely selecting the location and era he wishes to travel to next from the Historia Crux. Through this the story will branch at many points, ultimately making it possible to search out multiple endings,” he says.
“On top of this basic system it is also possible to rewind time within a single area, allowing you, for example, to go back to previously explored areas and defeat bosses that you could not handle before without having to complete the game and go for a second play through.”
Fear not: if you want to go straight through everything related to the story, you can.
“For those players not interested in getting into the side quests and exploring all the deeper possibilities, you also have the option of simply following the main story like in the original FFXIII,” adds Kitase.
As mentioned, Serah and Noel are now in the driver’s seat for XIII-2, although Lightning will make occasional playable appearances. But it’s worth bearing in mind that, compared to past Final Fantasy titles, the pair are very young leads. Perhaps too young? Kitase disagrees.
“In the original FFXIII we aimed to have a selection of main characters with a broad range of ages, but when we decided on having Serah as a main character in the sequel we thought we would need a male character of a similar age as a counterpoint. This was why we created Noel and made him not too far removed from Serah in terms of age.
“However, the world which Noel and his kind inhabit is a far tougher and more dangerous environment than our modern day world, so he is also a protagonist experienced beyond his years, which adds to his appeal.”
While Serah and Noel are the main leads, it seems that Lightning is still being pushed very hard in regards to marketing to the point it may overshadow the young pair. But Kitase says her role is still as significant as ever.
“In FFXIII-2 Lightning is still a very important figurehead character for the series,” he says. “It is Serah and Noel who players will actually be controlling for most of the time during the game, but throughout the whole adventure they will still be able to feel the presence of Lightning; she watches over their time travelling journey, so fans of the original need not worry that she has been left out.”
While the original was criticised for being too linear, towards the end of the game players encountered the open world of Gran Pulse. While the popular location makes a return for the sequel, the Historia Crux system will help expand upon its free-form play features, as well as those of other parts of the game’s world.
“We have structured FFXIII-2 so that each area accessible from the Historia Crux will take around 1-2 hours of gameplay to get through. The Archlyte Steppe in Gran Pulse is, of course, still a very expansive location but has been given a new level design where the player can control the weather to reach many different interlocking sections of the whole area,” says Kitase.
This Lightning drawing, signed by
Tetsuya Nomura, kick-started the
XIII-2 speculation train before the announce.
It reads: “She must not be forgotten.”

“The Historia Crux itself increases player freedom in a very different manner to the traditional idea of a ‘horizontally’ open free roaming world, by also letting you come and go ‘vertically’ between the same levels in multiple time periods. In this way, we have aimed to allow for freedom in multiple directions and in four dimensions.”
Another new addition to FFXIII-2 is QTEs. XIII-2 uses them in some of the biggest action set-pieces, such as boss fights and events outside them. While many bemoan the use of QTEs at all, Kitase, when explaining their usefulness, argues its all about immersion.
“The whole game has been designed to allow for player input and interaction in many different places. From our experience, there were a lot of players in previous Final Fantasy games who put down the controller to watch the beautiful cut scenes; they should watch out during FFXIII-2 if they don’t want to be caught off guard,” the producer notes.
Just before Final Fantasy XIII came out in the west, it was claimed by art director Isamu Kamikokuryou that there was enough content cut from the game to make a sequel. Naturally, when XIII-2 was eventually announced, one of the first questions was how much of that cut content would be included? How much of it could become DLC?
“This content was actually stuff that was rejected for inclusion in FFXIII because it did not make the required standards, and there are very good reasons we did not simply collect together all the rejected content and make a game out of it,” Kitase says.
“For this reason none of it has been used in FFXIII-2. We put in a lot of effort into seeing that all the graphical assets re-used from the original game have been reworked or altered in some way to make them new and different.”
With XIII-2 now nearly a month away, its release will come a year after it was first announced. The shorter turnaround to XIII, which was in development for five years before releasing in Japan, is thanks to using existing tech.
“When we started making FFXIII we had to create a development environment for the new generation of high end consoles pretty much from scratch, and this had a big effect on lengthening the development time,” he says.
“For FFXIII-2, however, we could start by simply improving on the existing FFXIII engine, and this played a large part in cutting down the development period. This also allowed us to spend the time we would have had to use sorting out the environment and core system on constructing a good game.”
Final Fantasy XIII-2 launches on January 31 in the US and February 3 in the UK and Europe for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Square Enix releases bizarre Bravely Default trailer

We weren’t even going to post this odd, soundless trailer for the upcoming 3DS RPG Bravely Default. But honestly, the fact that this is a near blank, mute trailer makes this somehow more compelling than if they’d released the type of trailer we’re used to seeing for handheld Japanese RPGs. We’re not sure what they were thinking when they did this but…here it is.At the very least it shows off some pretty good looking vistas that spark the imagination if you take a moment to visualize them in 3D. We’ve also included a more traditional trailer for the game below the weird one. Via Destructoid.

Square Enix releases new Theatrhythm trailer

While Square Enix fans are still marveling over the fact that Squeenix was able to come up with a more bizarre title than Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, the company is forging ahead with Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. Bizarre even by Final Fantasy standards, this Theatrhythm trailer shows off more of those sweet chibi versions of all your favorite FF characters battling with the power of music. A Peek At Final Fantasy XIII-2′s Puzzles

By Spencer . December 22, 2011 . 11:31am

Yes, the video is titled "Xbox exclusive content," but the only console specific item so far is a downloadable weapon. Aside from a different colored bow, Final Fantasy XIII-2 has the same cinematic actions and puzzles on both consoles.

Actually, there are three kinds of puzzles called Temporal Rifts in the English version. One of them has players guide Serah as she walks on vanishing tiles. The goal is to collect all of the crystals, but you can’t move backwards since the floor disappears after you move. Another puzzle shown in the trailer is called the Hands of Time, which has players makes players collect crystal that appear when the clock’s hands turn. The final puzzle has Serah connect same colored crystals before time runs out.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 comes out for PS3 and Xbox 360 on January 31 in North America.

Gunslinger Stratos: 60" Screens, Double Guns, And Online Play

By Spencer . January 10, 2012 . 11:46pm

Gunslinger Stratos is like a mix of 2Spicy, a versus style light gun game from Sega, and the massive Mobile Suit Gundam arcade machines. ByKing, the developer of Gunslinger Stratos, helped Namco Bandai develop Extreme Vs. too.

Each cabinet has a 60 inch screen and two gun controllers. You can fire them separately as if you were playing House of the Dead solo or "combine" the guns. Side style transform your character’s weapon from two guns to a shotgun or machine gun. Tandem style has players stack one gun on top of the other to make a laser cannon or rocket launcher. Square Enix says there will be hundreds of guns including a flamethrower, barrier shield used to protect allies, and a recovery gun. Players can buy weapons using a point system (and points are an additional purchase) and save data to a NESiCA card.

Gunslinger Stratos is played with four players, but the game can actually support eight. You can play in a free for all mode online with gunslingers across Japan. Or team up with your friends in the same arcade and take on the nation. There are also single player missions and co-op missions. Stages will be based on real world locations like Shibuya shown in these screenshots.

Gunslinger Stratos is slated for release this summer in Japan and the newly opened official site has a teaser video.

Square trademark for Sleeping Dogs leads to Kane & Lynch 3 speculation

NeoGAF has dug up another Square Enix trademark, this one for something called Sleeping Dogs, leading some to speculate it’s a subtitle for Kane & Lynch 3 due to the subtitle of the last outing, Dog Days. A job posting from IO Interactive back in September 2011 suggested that a third Kane & Lynch was in the works, and Ian Livingstone himself said in December 2010 the duo weren’t going away any time soon. You can view the trademark filing here, which lists a January 13 date.

Reality Shift Changes Kingdom Hearts 3D Into A Comic Book

By Spencer . January 24, 2012 . 12:34pm

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance switches combat to the touch screen when you trigger a Reality Shift. In the Tokyo Game Show demo, you would do this by pressing A and X at the same time. Trigger a Reality Shift in the Country of the Musketeers and the world changes into a touch screen comic book where Donald, Goofy, and Mickey help you attack Nightmares.

Dream Eaters, like Hornceratops, are allies. They fight on their own, but you can press an icon on the touch screen to do a link attack, which makes Hornceratops transform into a spiked ball.

Handsome Pegasus (seriously, that’s its name) has Thoroughbred Ride as its link attack. Use it to make Sora or Riku ride the Dream Eater and rush enemies at high speed.

You get to bring two Dream Eaters with you in Kingdom Hearts 3D. Comet drops a meteorite on the battlefield.

Wonder Jamboree makes a Wonder Nyah swell up like a balloon before belly flopping on Nightmares. This is kind of like the Wonder Nyah’s regular link where Sora bounces on enemies while riding the Wonder Nyah.

Unison Rush is a high speed physical attack.

Players learn new abilities by unlocking them with link points on a sphere grid-like board.

Ghost Clown and Scissor Beetle are two of the Nightmares you’ll fight in the game.

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance comes out on March 29 in Japan.

Square Enix has trademarked something called Rebellion Overdrive in Japan. Siliconera might be on the right track by suggesting it could be one of Square’s Unreal 3 games. Perhaps the online RPG announced last year? We’ll ask.

Hazama tells the story of Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy in latest Iwata Asks

Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy, the debut title from producer Ichiro Hazama, was originally designed for release on DS but due to hardware limitations, the game’s production was held back. Speaking in the the latest edition of Iwata Asks, Hazama said the idea for the title came after he finished work on the Final Fantasy movie Advent Children, and with the release of 3DS, a handheld with the storage capacity and power was finally available to bring his ideas to fruition. Thus he went to Indies Zero to finalize his plans for the game, and after getting the all-clear from Tetsuya Nomura, work on the game started that very day. In order to get fans involved, Hazama said Square sent out fan surveys sent, and the 70 songs contained in the game are a direct result of said surveys. The more you know, etcetera. The rhythm-action game, which contains four-player co-op, will land on 3DS February 16. A western release has yet to be confirmed.
