Final Fantasy XIV producer, Naoki Yoshida, put another of his developer columns up this week on the game’s forums. Yoshida starts out by teasing something with pictures of Roegadyn in swimsuits.

This is part of some sort of upcoming summer celebration event in Final Fantasy XIV. Moving on, Yoshida talks a little bit about patch 1.18, which went live this week, and then discusses ongoing player concerns. He starts out with the future of rankings.

“I don’t want there to be a huge loss of skill points imposed for dying, or for players to have to grind 5–6 hours a day for 8 months to get to the high ranks,” Yoshida writes. “I do think ranking up should take longer in MMOs than in non-MMOs, but I plan to make the process both possible and enjoyable for players willing to invest the time, even if they’re solo, and even by doing quests and guildleves.”

Speaking with regard with party play, the development team is hurrying to make adjustments to respawn timers, linked-enemy bonuses, and party bonuses to make skill point awards in public areas better while playing in a party. Yoshida believes that putting together a party takes time and effort, so he’d like to make sure skill point awards reflect that. More instanced raids are on the way as well.

Yoshida also mentions enemy distribution. In some areas, enemy distribution left gaps due to the expanse of the area, and this will be heavily adjusted in the future as well. In his next column, he says, he’ll discuss patch 1.19 and more changes to the game.

Final Fantasy XIV producer addresses balance tweaks and combat changes

In response to player feedback to last week’s patch 1.18, FFXIV producer Naoki Yoshida has posted a letter on the game’s official forum explaining some of the changes.

Concerned that the number of changes to the game may have left players feeling a little overwhelmed, Yoshida said:
“I realize some of you may be confused or upset at some of the sudden changes, but that’s why the forums are there for you to have your voice heard. So please leave us your feedback!
“The topics we’ve gotten the most feedback on are class balance, UI visibility (which will be addressed in 1.18a), and skill points for levequests between ranks 20–30. We’ll be using this last week’s worth of feedback to decide where more adjustments are needed, and will be working on them and any further balancing that is necessary together with our 1.19 tasks and releasing them in smaller patches.”
Yoshida also discussed changes to the combat system, saying he was “happy to see posts claiming that combat now requires strategy,” as that had been the crux of the changes made in that area.
In concluding his letter, Yoshida alluded to the “swimsuits I mentioned last letter,” assuring readers that they will be available as part of the summer event planned for early August. In case you were wondering.
Thanks, Massively.

Game feels vastly different than it did 2 weeks ago.

The dungeon content is tough, not impossible, but tough. Requires organization and use of strategy. The UI fix is needed due to the revamped skill-bar, which they should be out shortly.

After the first round of changes, I can't wait for the rest. The game began to feel like a Final Fantasy after 1.18.

Wark! Chocobos And Materia System To Enter Final Fantasy XIV With Patch 1.19

By Ishaan . August 15, 2011 . 1:02pm

Patch 1.19 for Final Fantasy XIV will introduce several of the changes that producer, Naoki Yoshida, has touched upon in the past. The most major is something called the “My Little Chocobo” system. That may not be the final name, according to Yoshida, who posted a “Letter from the Producer” column this week, mentioning the changes and new content that will be introduced through the 1.19 patch.

Chocobos are part of a new transportation system. Patch 1.19 will allow for Chocobo rentals in the three city-states. Players will also be able to acquire their own personal Chocobos. Finally, there will be airships flying between the three city-states. You’ll need to pay in Gil for both Chocobo rentals and passage aboard airships.

Other new content includes the Ifrit battle quest and a caravan escort system. Updates to both these are planned for patch 1.20. The Materia crafting system that Yoshida mentioned back in April will be included, too.

Some of these changes may not make the cut in 1.19, however. “Just so you’re given due warning, the team is running on a tightrope to stay on schedule, so please don’t be surprised if a handful of things end up getting put off until 1.19a or later,” Yoshida writes. He also mentions that patch 1.19′s notes are “3-5 times longer” than 1.18.

You can read about more of the extensive changes in patch 1.19 in Yoshida’s column, linked to above.
