Storyline Confusion - HELP! (MIGHT BE SPOILERS!)

I understand pretty much all of the storyline when it comes to FFX but there's one part that really makes me confused and was hoping someone could clear it up for me....

At the beggining of the game where you in Zanarkand, is that Dream Zanarkand or is that the real Zanarkand? I have played the game many times and I never know what version of Zanarkand it is at the beggining.

Also, a FFX-2 related question - is Shuuyin the real-life counterpart version of Tidus? Did Shuuyin go the Mt. Gagazet with the rest of the Zanarkand survivors to become part of Dream Zanarkand?

This game hurts my brain sometimes.

The beginning part is Dream Zanarkand, the Fayth explains this when you reach the end of Gagazet Mountain

As for Shuyin, it's more or less assumed he is Tidus' real life counterpart, though he ended up dying before the end of the Machina War, yet the Fayth must have still been able to dream him up somehow

As far as I know, Dream Zanarkand is an actual place that you can go to. Auron took Sin there to fetch the Tidus and bring him to Spira. What happened to DZ after that I'm not certain of.

Yes Artemisia is correct dream Zanarkand is an actual summoning so it really exists, it was sent far out to sea by Yu Yevon. Then he created Sin to protect it, effectively halting most naval traffic and anyone discovering the Dream.

Dream Zanarkand was created by the fayth's inside the temples not by Yu Yevon.

It seems real for the fact that Tidus mom was sent to the farplane after she died and so was Ject and Tidus.

As far as how sin got there the first time when Ject got taken from Dream Zanarkand, my guess is that it has something to do with the Fayth trying to get rid of sin forever so they allowed for Sin and Yu Yevon to come into the dream Zanarkand to grab him.

The second time how Sin got there must of been through Ject while he still had most of his control over Sin.

Theres no real explanation how Sin got there but this theory is as good as any other one I guess

A fayth has to be summoned, Yu Yevon summoned the Dream Zanarkand by turning the Zanarkand survivors into the massive Fayth at Gagazet. Sent the dream out to sea, then created Sin as an armour around himself to protect it and destroy any city that developed machina that were too powerful, but eventually lost control of Sin and it just became a force of destruction.

Licky is right.

The first time Jecht went to Spira was because he was training so far out at sea, he accidently comes into contact with Sin.

After Jecht becomes Sin, he takes Auron to Dream Zanarkand, he has more control then, he loses control the longer he is Sin. Only the prayer of the Fayth can calm him down.

Then Jecht/Sin comes to collect Tidus. He attacks Dream Zanarkand because he cannot control himself.
