Square-Enix 2011 General News Roundup Thread

Lol those pics were just nice additions. They have nothing to do with the actual article.. My bad for not saying sooner or stating it in the post.

There might be a Wii HD within 2 years and perhaps FFXV will end up on the console ..who knows..untill then major rumour :griin:

Also, there's a very likely chance we'll hear about XV at E3, maybe just a "yeah it's in production" but with Dissidia and 3rd Birthday on store shelves, Type-0 finished, and Versus and XIII-2 nearing the end of their development, something else has to be in the works, and we all know Square looovvvesss to tell us about stuff 5-7 years before it's released (coughcoughXIIIcoughandcoughVersuscough).

It's certainly a possibility they may reveal FFXV in E3, but they've now stuck to a policy that states they release more and more information on games (actual game announcements count as the release of information) the closer they get to the game's actual release. This means they've pledged not to announce games 5 years before they are actually out, presumably following criticisms from what they did for Crystal Bearers and Versus. That's why I'm speculating they may not be in too much of a rush to announce anything yet.

Versus may be nearing the end to some respects, but until it hits our store shelves, we still have a bit of a wait. I don't know how far they are in the hypothetical FFXV with sidestories, spinoffs and sequels being made for various franchises not just Final Fantasy, but I think the earliest for info could be sometime early next year. I'd love to be wrong though, but it's just my two cents.

I didn't know that, but that's awesome. Announcing a game and then not releasing it for 6+ years later is just ridiculous. Even XIII's wait was ridiculous, it was (along with Versus) announced before XII even came out but didn't end up coming out till last year. But it might seem like you're right, XIII-2 was announced this January with a promised "this winter" release date.

Square Enix have put together a free digital magazine about their upcoming games. You can find the first issue at this link, either to read online or to download as a PDF file.

Included in the first issue are interviews with Final Fantasy XIV producer, Naoki Yoshida, Crystal Dynamics’ Karl Stewart, and information on Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Final Fantasy XIII-2 and advertisements for figurines.

It’s an interesting experiment for Square, and a nice way to get caught up on the basics of all these games.

Elevator Action? Really? It may seem like a strange choice, but Square Enix is in the final stages of prepping a remake of the once-popular arcade game. The original Elevator Action game released to arcades in 1983, and was subsequently ported to several home systems, including the NES.

For those who weren't at the top of their game back in 1983, or for whom those days are but a misty recollection, perhaps a reminder is in order? In Elevator Action, players adopt the role of a spy as he infiltrates a building filled with an inordinate number of elevators. Enemy secret agents attack him, and he must evade them while collecting all the secret documents in the building.

Elevator Action Deluxe is looking to emulate most of the fundamentals of that original game, but update everything from gameplay to graphics. The new version includes local multiplayer for up to four players, HD graphics, and unlockable "secret documents," which amount to old Taito game pamphlets. In addition, you'll be able to play both the new game and the complete version of the original game. We'll let you look at the screenshots below and figure out which is which.

There's not much build-up for the new PSN game, which releases on August 30th for $9.99. Will this spy ride to the top floor, or get trapped in a lift with no power? Only time will tell.

Will "Bravely Default" Lead To A New Square Enix Game?

By Spencer . August 24, 2011 . 3:05am
Right now, no. Later, probably since Square Enix registered the domain name bravelydefault.com. I checked various trademark databases and "Bravely Default" wasn’t registered. Perhaps, that means "Bravely Default" isn’t the name of a new game, but a site like the Sarif Industries page.

Square Enix will announce a new game from Dark Void developer Airtight Games this week at Penny Arcade Expo. Maybe the two are related?

A tip of the hat to Liam for the heads up. Thanks!

The next project from Kim Swift (who left Valve after working on Portal to lead her own team at Airtight Games) is an adorable puzzle-platformer that lets you play with the laws of physics to solve complex puzzles.

Quantum Conundrum has echoes of Portal in its room-by-room puzzle design, but its mechanics are strikingly different. Using a dimension-shifting glove, you can alter the properties of everything around you. At PAX, Swift showed off two dimensions with fascinating effects: the self-explanatory slow motion dimension, and the unusual fluffy dimension.

One simple puzzle had Swift trying to get through a door locked by an industrial-strength switch. A nearby safe could activate the switch, but it's far too heavy to carry. Flipping over to the fluffy dimension makes the safe cuter and much pinker, but also makes it light enough to throw across the room. Swift goes fluffy, grabs the safe, puts it on the switch, de-fluffs back into the regular dimension, and the safe's natural weight activates the switch to allow her through the door.

Another puzzle involved an activator beam controlling a laser gate which lets the player through but vaporizes any items. Swift had to bring a safe through the gate to access the platform leading out of the room. This one is a multi-step process:
  1. Enter fluffy dimension
  2. Throw safe on trajectory through gate
  3. As safe is in air, flip to slow motion dimension
  4. Run to other room, place box in path of activator beam
  5. Enter normal dimension
  6. After safe lands on other side of gate, go fluffy and place it beneath platform
  7. Re-enter normal dimension so safe doesn't slide out from under you, jump up to goal
Quantum Conundrum is scheduled to come out on Steam, Xbox Live Arcade, and PlayStation Network in early 2012.

Tidbits From The Quantum Conundrum Panel

Portal's Kim Swift and several Airtight Games team members gave an impressive live demo of their new game, Quantum Conundrum. While most of it has been covered already, there were a few new pieces of info.

If you missed the boat on Quantum Conundrum, check out our first preview here. All caught up? Let's continue.

- The game will take between 4 to 6 hours to beat the critical path. If you want to go after optional content, it'll take another hour or two. Swift teased some kind of collectible sprinkled throughout the game that will be revealed at a later time.

- In the Q&A portion of the panel, someone asked if QC was a reworking of Valve's F-Stop, the mysterious original concept of Portal 2 which didn't include portals (from The Final Hours of Portal 2 iPad app). Swift clarified that QC is in no way related to F-Stop and that it would be highly illegal to use any Valve concepts. She also said F-Stop was not her idea and that she really hopes that it gets made eventually because it's great.

- Your in-game uncle, Professor Quadwrangle is missing in the game and you have to solve the mysteries in his house to find him. What's new here is that he'll chat you up throughout the game via an intercom system just like GlaDOS.

-The game will include five dimensions: normal, slow motion, reverse gravity, light and fluffy, and one that's top secret at this point.

-QC will not ship with a level editor, but Airtight may be open to it in the future.

Square Enix set to unveil next Dragon Quest next week

Nobody yet knows if we’ll see the big reveal of Dragon Quest 10, but Square Enix says they’ve got something for us next week.

dragon-quest-4-character-art.jpg

The RPG giant has announced that they will be making the announcement on September 5th at around 2:00pm in the local Japanese time zone (GMT +9.) The announcement will be made via a live stream on Square Enix’s Ustream channel.
We hate “announcements of announcements” as much as the next guy, but in this case at least they’re alerting the fans so they can tune in themselves.
It’s not specifically said to be Dragon Quest 10, but it is widely speculated to be.

Final Fantasy fans can add pink hair to their action figure collection come December. The Lightning figure is based off of her character design from the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII-2. She's equipped with her shield and sword, and like most of Square Enix's Play Arts figures comes with a second pair of hands.
She'll release in Japan this December and will be made available here in the States shortly thereafter. Let's just pray that the popularity of this toy doesn't lead to another figure of Hope getting made. I hate that kid.

TGS 2011: Wada and the paradigm shift of gaming’s future

Square Enix’s Yoichi Wada turned visionary in his TGS address this morning, telling the industry to climb the mountain of games tech diversity rather than fall. Brenna Hillier reports from Tokyo.

wadaheader.jpg

Wada at a glance

square-insert.jpg

Joined Square in 2000.
Became president and CEO in 2011.
Chairman of CESA and VC of Digital Content Use Promotion Conference.
Instrumental in 2009 Eidos Interactive acquisition.

Satoru Iwata’s impassioned anti-smartphone tirade at GDC 2011 foreshadowed a grim reception for the largely disconnected, markedly conservative 3DS. Nintendo has become something of a byword for the Japanese games industry’s reputation for facing firmly backwards towards the glorious past.

What a sharp contrast with Yoichi Wada’s opening keynote to the Tokyo Game Show 2011. The Square Enix president and CESA chairman was strictly business, bypassing nostalgic hyperbole in favour of presenting some cold, hard facts – with all the graphs pointing up, not down.

Drawing on his long history with gaming, Wada scoffed at naysayers who believe the “traditional” industry markets are dying, leaving no place for the Japanese giants of triple-A development.
“There is a revolution,” he said, then pointing out: “Along with this revolution, the market itself is expanding.”

tgs-header.jpg

A new kind of gamer

Wada didn’t deny the changes wrought by new kinds of gaming, openly admitting that user’s willingness to invest in dedicated gaming machines has dropped as multifunction devices like smartphones have become better platforms for gaming.

Beyond that, the new gamer, growing up in spheres far from those of the last major hardware cycles, doesn’t understand the kinds of games built for these paradigms. The kid who kicks off with the instant gratification of Angry Birds doesn’t want to spend hours learning to use the twin sticks, or figure out the state-swapping of RPGs, Square Enix’s own forte.

This new kind of gamer, whose first experience with gaming may have been the gorgeous 3D graphics of a casual smartphone title like Infinity Blade, doesn’t recognise the benefit of increased processing power in dedicated consoles. This new kind of gamer doesn’t see the point in lashing out on hardware for one purpose only, and doesn’t want to pay a premium on a game up front, but set their own value as they play.

arcade-header.jpg

Geology

But Wada’s acknowledgement of the massive growth and importance of emerging markets didn’t ring a death knell over traditional gaming platforms and models.
He argued instead that the appearance of new kinds of gaming is history repeating itself: the first generation of games, arcade cabinets, asked players for a coin every time they wanted to play, even though that experience might last only a few minutes. When Nintendo introduced NES, an affordable purchase for ordinary families capable of playing multiple games, those who had been unwilling to outlay that one hundred yen coin hopped on board.

The industry veteran showed a graph of gaming markets over time, which formed a striking resemblance to a strata map of an improbably sharp mountain.
Approaching the mountain, we find at its roots a few bumps and hillocks – the arcade scene. When we stare upwards to its peak, the spike of smartphone gaming, we can’t but acknowledge that there’s a lot more rock – precious cash money – in the latter than the former.

But if we could cut a cross-section of this bizarre geography, we’d find those arcade roots extending right through to the mountain’s core – still the same low lumps and bumps, but existing continuously over time.

Other forms of gaming haven’t replaced that market – they’ve added new markets on top, layers upon layers. Whether businesses are interested in pursuing those rewards is obviously a different question, but Wada’s point is that the boom of freemium, smartphone and cloud gaming doesn’t spell the end of triple-A development – just its end as the premiere, highest-grossing aspect.

In time, Wada seemed to suggest, something else will come along to subsume even the latest trend – another layer of sediment, if you will – which, thanks to ever-increasing mainstream interest and growing wealth, will prove even more dauntingly spiky than the current peak.

The argument doesn’t rest on NES alone – Wada pointed to several revolutions over the past few decades, including the introduction of multimedia-enabled consoles and PCs, motion controls, handhelds, and online play – and more importantly, he didn’t suggest traditional companies should take his words as permission to close their eyes, cover their ears and keep making the same old games.

“The driving forces have changed,” he said of the games industry. “We have to accommodate this new generation.”

lightbrain.jpg

The Future

That’s something large publishers are well equipped to do, more so than platform holders who can value add all they want, but will struggle to stay relevant in an increasingly hardware-agnostic world.

“The competition maybe won’t be between hardware platforms,” Wada continued. “The cloud is a real revolution.”

He added: “[Consumers already make] a lot of investment in devices. I have two PCs, I have a smartphone, I have such huge processing power with all these devices added together.

“If we could concentrate such processing power on the cloud – and if we had better communication powers, we’d have a paradigm shift.”

Not one to shy away from speculation, Wada made some bold claims about the next major steps in gaming beyond the seemingly inevitable shift to cloud gaming, positing holographic visuals and brain-machine interfaces.

But whatever new driving forces shape the games industry, developers and publishers can and will adapt, as they have on each successive wave of change.

“You need to see what kind of gameplay experience you can provide,” Wada said. “What do customers see as value in games? We’re seeing a shift.”

Decades later, Wada noted with some humour, we’ve returned to our roots. Just as in the arcade, players are once again willing to pay as they play, forking out micro-transactions and subscriptions depending on how much satisfaction they find in gaming.

The executive urged developers and publishers to take these new values into account, and to find ways to make games that offer an experience which cannot be reproduced – a value-added experience.

Like Iwata’s notoriously reactionary keynote earlier this year, Wada’s presentation was a response to the feeling of gloom coming out of both Japanese and western press with regards to Japanese development.

But rather than ask us to apply the brakes and give him time to catch up, Wada showed himself more than ready to leap on board, and to see his peers along for the ride.

[FONT=Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif]The Word To Your Moogle Tour completed its first stop at San Diego Comic-Con last month, and the fans sure brought it! Each day, attendees scoured the event for fellow players to form words with, resulting in all of our prizes being awarded! The group above stole the show with the 18-letter Master Word: HYOGUGUSARINOTACHI (a weapon from FINAL FANTASY XI), and are currently in top position for the Ultimate Prize! PAX Prime is up next! They have the advantage of going second, but can they capitalize on it? Can any group form a word from FINAL FANTASY that is longer than 18 letters? We'll find out later this month! Final Fantasy XIV finally gets Chocobos

There was a lot wrong with Final Fantasy XIV at launch, but it’s hard to believe that the game skipped over one of the series’ most iconic pieces of imagery – the Chocobo. In the latest patch, players can finally ride the gigantic birds.
ff14_boko.jpg

Patch 1.19 will change a lot of things relating to in-game travel but the core of the update comes with Chocobos. Players who are fully enlisted with a Grand Company will be able to purchase a personal Chocobo for 3000 company seals. That bird will then be theirs to use as they wish.
Players too early in the game to do that can merely rent a bird for 800 gil as long as they’re at level 10. Airships, meanwhile, will allow players to fast-travel between the major cities of Final Fantasy XIV and open the game up more than before.
There’s a full preview on the Final Fantasy XIV website and a video of Chocobos in action below. And, yes – that theme music is also in. Thanks, Massively.

Producer letter reveals target date for major Final Fantasy XIV patch

Final Fantasy XIV’s new producer Naoki Yoshida has had the unenviable task of fixing the thoroughly broken MMO, and has given a tentative date for a major patch in his latest letter to the community.
ff14.jpg

In the letter Yoshida reveals that his team is shooting for a September 30th release of the next major patch which will bring all-new content, Chocobos and major front-and-back end system updates to the MMO in an attempt to bring it closer to the product Yoshida has in the past admitted it should have been at launch.
Yoshida’s letter also reveals that characters and their retainers will get an upgrade to their storage capacity, allowing players to hold and store more items long-term.
Yoshida took over as Producer from Hiromichi Tanaka after Tanaka was forced to step down after negative reception from fans and critics alike when a properly broken Final Fantasy XIV first launched. He’s been writing regular public letters to the fans ever since taking over, keeping them abreast of changes he and his team are making or intending to make.
The PlayStation 3 version of Final Fantasy XIV has been indefinitely delayed until the PC version is improved significantly.
Thanks, Massively.

AKB48 Idol Yuko Oshima To Beta Test Final Fantasy XIII-2

By Cheng Kai . October 13, 2011 . 8:35pm

With just two short months left to the Japanese release of Final Fantasy XIII-2, it’s pretty much crunch-time for producer Yoshinori Kitase and his team. It’s the one final spurt to smooth out any rough edges still remaining, and they’ll need all the help they can get.

Lots and lots of help. From fresh perspectives. In the form of beta testers. Such as Final Fantasy XIII fan Yuko Oshima, who appeared on an Final Fantasy XIII-2 television special last month to give her thoughts on the TGS build. Yes, that’s right, the very same Yuko Oshima whom you can date or cruelly reject in Namco Bandai’s AKB1/48: I Fell in Love With an Idol in Guam. Oricon Style reports that the AKB48 star is the face of a new Final Fantasy XIII-2 commercial that will air in Japan from October 15.

Entitled "I’m an official beta tester", the ad will show Oshima walk into Square Enix’s offices in a pants-suit, greet the camera before receiving her official beta-tester namecard, and walking into a booth loaded with Final Fantasy XIII-2. It may be a commercial, but Oshima’s not just "pretending" to be a beta tester, she’ll actually be one. I’m not kidding – look, there’s even a manifest!

In the hand-written manifest, Oshima says that she and 12 other official beta-testers – collectively known as "Judge XIII" – will post their honest thoughts and brief previews of the game as they play through the final version, on a special campaign site.

Oshima hopes that fans of the series will check out the campaign site and – if they found the posts interesting like them on Facebook. She goes on to explain that if enough Facebook likes are generated, then as a sign of gratitude Square Enix will hold a meet-and-greet session – with Oshima appearing in Final Fantasy XIII-2 cosplay -to commemorate the game’s release.

The Judge XIII campaign site will open sometime in November, and Final Fantasy XIII-2 is scheduled for a December 15 release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in Japan.

Patch 1.19a For Final Fantasy XIV To Add New Sidequest, Monsters, Vendor Items

By Ishaan . October 13, 2011 . 2:32pm

Now that patch 1.19 is out, the Final Fantasy XIV development team is focusing on patch 1.19a, which will bring another round of improvements and updates. These include the addition of new enemies and a new Grand Company-related sidequest, titled “Gone with the Wind”.

The prices of several items have been adjusted, too, and various NPC vendors in the games have had their inventory updated with new gear. These additions, along with numerous other changes, are currently being tested.

You can read the full list of planned features for patch 1.19 on Square Enix’s forums.

Lord Of Apocalypse Demo Coming This Month

By Spencer . November 16, 2011 . 12:35am
Just like Lord of Arcana before it, Square Enix will release a PSP demo of Lord of Apocalypse prior to the game’s launch in Japan. Famitsu magazine says a demo for Access Games’ second hunting title will be available sometime this month. The depth of the demo has not been revealed.

Lord of Apocalypse is a multiplatform title appearing on PSP and PlayStation Vita on the same day. The demo will be our first look at the PSP version since Square Enix only brought the Vita version to Tokyo Game Show. According to Square Enix, content in both versions is the same, but Lord of Apocalypse does not have cross platform multiplayer.

Ultros Is Just One Of The Iconic Final Fantasy Villains In Theatrhythm

By Spencer . November 15, 2011 . 11:15pm
News from Jump revealed subcharacters – Princess Sarah, Cid, Faris, and Aerith as playable characters in Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy.

Famitsu revealed more of the enemies you’ll fight in Square Enix’s musical take on Final Fantasy. Golbez’s archfiends from Final Fantasy IV: Scarmiligone, Cagnazzo, Barbariccia, and Rubicante are in the Nintendo 3DS game. Other monsters in the game include: Mandragora, Hill Gigas, Marlboro, Judge, Giant (Ogre?), Gesper (from FFVIII), Black Waltz No.3 (from FFIX), Goblin, PSICOM Soldier, Adamantoise, and Deathgaze.

Ifrit was the only summon available when I played Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy back at Tokyo Game Show. Of course the game has more and Famitsu confirmed: Shiva, Ramuh, Odin, and Bahamut.
