A thread for the musicians. Guitarists, singers pianists and epic triangle players.

Say what your currently learning at the moment and how its going.

I play guitar for those who dont know.

Learning 2 songs at the moment.

First one is 'babydoll' by 'the fratellis'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvUCPOKrXfI

FInding it really hard to get a good strumming pattern while maintaining vocals. Kinda frustrating but im gunna keep at it, as its a great tune. Its just the damn pattern :rage:

Second song ive just finished is 'sit down' by 'james'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRD51qEJ8t4&feature=related

Really fantastic song and very easy to play. Its basically just E, A, B chords with some slight adjustments.

ive probably got too much on my plate with regards to songs im sposed to be learning. im fairly shite so the song has to be fairly easy or i really really have to want to learn it. anyway.

i mostly end up just faffing about with my electric guitar but im semi concentrating on wonderful tonight by clapton which is comin along alright i spose. i did have a wee look at layla but i'd prefer to play the unplugged version which i've also semi taken on :lew: ehhhhhhhh...hey joe by jimi hendrix, i have all the parts and can play it i think but that was kind of a passing thought. i've not really touched it for a wee bit. a few eagles songs i want to learn and kind of started learning but whenever i go back to them i just play the riffs then get bored and move on :lew:

on the acoustic im kinda struggling for stuff i wanna play so i end up just playing the same old stuff. atm its sit down, protect me or golden brown but i had a look at a guys fingerstyle interpretation of hear you me by jimmy eat world which so far seems to be easy enough even for me. also ive been attempting hey ma by james since forever it feels like but there arent any tabs and i doubt i could transcribe it myself. im generally shite :gonk:

I've been sort of spanning across a bunch of things on the guitar at the moment. There aren't any songs in particular that I'm working on for the immediate future, just long term efforts. I've been working on soloing licks for the past 2 or so months now. Mostly licks based on minor pentatonics. I recently started learning a few licks that move around the neck, instead of staying in the same zone. I also recently started working on sweep picking patterns. Sweeping is a pretty tough discipline to perfect, but if you can make it work, you create some awesome solos.

For long term goals, a few songs I'd like to be able to play are Altitudes by Jason Becker, Tornado of Souls by Megadeth and Sweet Child O' Mine by Guns 'N Roses. At this point, Sweet Child O' Mine is probably the quickest one I'll pick up on, but still a challenge nonetheless.

Slow Dancing in a Burning Room - John Mayer: A little softer than what I'm generally into and Mayer tends to be a polarizing artist, but I think the progression is very pleasing, and it's great to improv over.

[EDIT: Mods, please don't delete my post because it's not a Lady GaGa song. K?]

Recently I learned a few basic riffs; In The Belly of Shark and Orchestra of Wolves by Gallows and I have my sight set on One armed Scissor by At The Drive-in (but I haven't gotten around to it yet.)

But much like Stang, my focus is not transfixed on learning specific songs at the moment but rather just learning new techniques and such. Lately I've been screwing around with my pedals which were untouched for a fair while. I've been trying to use the pedals to create weird rhythms and such. Aside from that I've been experimenting with new chords (putting random notes together) to see what works in what context. I find that particularly interesting.

ehhhhh

finally got round to hey ma, for the past month or so i spose, really since i started taking guitar lessons. my teacher admitted it wasnt the sort of thing hes used to be he'd give it a go and so far he's done pretty bloody well, but its hard to get a feel for it so it'll take some work.

need your love so bad (fleetwood mac's version), as it was suggested to me by my guitar teacher to help develop ideas for blues playing.

finally finished learning tears in heaven, though it wasnt too difficult as i'd spent some time on it previously and came back to it.

laid by james, though the chords are easy im tryin to figure out a fingerstyle arrangement type of thing, wont be too difficult, just need to sit down and have a fiddle.

other than that just some music theory stuff, though nothing too complex cause my poor wee scottish brain canna handle it :sad3:

I'm learning to many songs to count on the piano :gonk: I have all these music sheets laying around that I start and never finish. But I'm somewhere in the middle of the songs "If Everyone Cared" and "Far Away" by Nickelback (love that band), I'm almost know "Numb" by Linkin Park 100%, and as a request by my cousin, I'm learning the piano collection of AC's Aerith's Theme for him :P And for pieces that my parents want me to play for them -_-... I just need some polishing, but I learned "Comptine d'un autre ete" by Yann Tiersen and "An Affair To Remember" don't know who it's by and don't care, hate that song. -__-

I'm actually thinking of developing some of my own music soon since I have a pretty decent set of equipment.

making an opening or a riff is not that difficult, but I'm having a lot of trouble coming up with ideas for a chorus since I'm not an experienced vocalist and don't know what way I want a song to go after a riff.

It is pretty frustrating :monster:

I've been working at Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix for the past few hours. I'm mainly concerned with getting the intro. It's coming along slowly but surely. It's difficult but fun to play never the less.

I'm going to pick up a bass guitar book soon, but right now I'm learning 7 Nation Army (White Stripes) and Feel Good Inc. (Gorillaz). Mainly because they're fairly simple and they're helping me get used to the guitar and strengthening my fingers. :)

And the bass lines sound friggin' badass. :gasp:

working out the kinks of an Exo-Politics solo. I need to get my strings replaced, they aren't bending so well.

I play acoustic guitar since january so I have to train my guitar skills. The songs I currently learn are:
Oasis-Wonderwall, it isn´t really hard but I still do lot of misstakesxD
Halleluja It´s really hard for mexD
and Sportfreunde Stiller-Ein Kompliment It´s not as hard as halleluja but its harder as Wonderwall.

Currently trying to get this song down

Dream Theater-Innocence Faded

The Intro solo is pretty hard for me so I've been grinding it out with a metronome until I can get it up to speed. Love how these songs are perfect for getting your alternate picking ability up to snuff, especially in Petrucci's solos (which I cannot do at all lol.). I'll definitely get there though.

Revival of a dead thread

This is what im learning atm. Not too hard of a fingerstyle song but still a challenge to get the timing right etc. Making a few changes to this exact cover as a few of his bits i dont like.

wow thats sexy

i'll never be able to play like that lol, good luck lew

The Piano Collections version of Aerith's Theme on the piano! ^_^ It doesn't sound tough when you listen to it, but it's quite fiddly! :hmph: Much harder than Tifa's Theme and To Zakarkand. :sad3:

Currently trying to learn Breaking All Illusions by Dream Theater. It's over 12 minutes long and has about 24 pages of tabs. I've just about got the intro down. I'm also off and on trying to learn Viking Kong by Racer X. It's going better than I thought it would.
