choose the sword or shield as this games magic system isnt great your mp runs out quick, but in kh2 its better so you can choose the staff if you want in kh2

I chose the sword and the staff. The game was relatively easier to me, as the keyblade adopts a very simple strategy. "Attack Attack Attack". As you will be using the keyblade the vasy majority of the game, the sword and staff will help you. Choosing the sword first and then staff.

the fight with Riku at Hollow Bastion

he hardly does any damage to you. Not to mention that is one of the hardest bosses in the game.

It may still seem pointless for magic if only one is useful, though. Personally, I went with Shield, and gave up the staff. However, I'm more of a defense person anyway. Defense in Kingdom Hearts is really everything, along with Strength.
