Uniform is a good idea but bad at the same time

Good: its cheaper for parents tp buy clothes all year round, teachers can know if someones missing in class and it shows cleanlyness to a school

Bad: you cant express yourself through your clothes, with uniform you have to make yourself stand out more to get notice

aye, uniforms are good and bad.

Good: because you can't go and diss someone's outfit, because you're wearing the same thing. And that restricts the amount of people who just dress waaay too improperly.

Bad: Where does the individuality go then? I mean, my way of dressing (all black with lots of chainz and shizz) wouldn't fly. So don't uniforms take away from a person's rights???

I wouldn't say they take away a persons rights, I mean theres a time and a place for chains really Health and safety issuse! You can still express your indivduality through other means I guess. They just want everyone looking smart and presentable. Same goes with work. I don't wear shirts and trousers outside work at all. I admit the uniforms are pretty much always bland but they are catering for the majority I guess

The only thing that irks me is not being able to have visible peircings/ tattoos because thats something you can't really change once it's done. But well, it's the way it works

Uniforms have nothing to do with "rights". In some schools those are the ways to keep their students identified at all times, and to stand by equality. Besides school is not a place to dress as if we were going to some kind of party. School is lame enough to kill anyone's fun-and-party spirit.

I admit, on a side note, that some colors of the uniforms I've seen suck....like mixing green and yellow...wtf? Or purple and orange...

I guess we're kinda lucky at my school that we only have a dress code and not a set uniform. Basically, anything goes as long as it's black, but we must wear ties all the time. My tie is just red at that, so we all look like a bunch of Billy Joe's.

So even with uniform in place, people still manage to express their 'individuality' as you get people wearing skinny jeans and whatnot, so I'll admit it would be a lot worse if we were all in a uniform. Hell, when the new headteacher decided to introduce blazers last year the head boy started a petition. =/ I personally don't mind them though, saves me bringing a jacket.

School uniforms has many purposes, and it has been stated here by many. I personally do not have anything against uniforms. To me that is just an identity of what school you belong to, and equality or not, there is some appeal to me when seeing other people wear uniforms (or myself for that matter). Why? Because it does make students appear a little more on the organized side - despite how ugly the style and colors are. (That's just your own preferable fashion taste there).

I wore uniform back in the Philippines when I was a kid, and although it looked "cool" at the time, I now look back and think, "Wow, I would not like to be caught wearing those." Back in California, I had to wear uniform yet again - this time a white blouse and/or gray pants/skirt. It was ugly, but I still am glad I wore uniform back then because it did give me a sense of equality with the rest of the kids.

There is some difference when I did transfer to schools that accepts "street clothes". I can see that there were a lot of pressure for both girls and boys (girls, most especially) to dress up more like their peers even though they are quite uncomfortable with the style of clothing. In the end, it's just a matter of "fitting in" by dressing up like your friends. So in that case, uniforms do help a lot of kids quite a bit, believe it or not.

Yeah and drive away the idea of kids having to wear clothes similar to their friends only to "fit" in school. Honestly, uniforms do a lot of good to schools besides, sometimes trying to "fit in" creates distractions between studenst (which are already quite distracted for some reason XD). In my school we have days when we can wear "street clothes" but meh, I get to decide what to wear for that day and it slows me down.
