The Real Crystal Skulls
Many have watched the Indiana Jones movie, but there are infact real crystal skulls out there. and there is different superstitions about them. religions have even been formed around some. There are many rumors on these skulls here are a few:
They were given to man by the gods.
Aliens brought them to earth.
if all 13 are are found and placed in the correct place then the world will not end in 2012.
they have healing properties.
they have images of aliens and UFOs in them.
They came from atlantis or other advance cultures so old that they would disprove Darwin's theory of evolution.
these are just a couple examples. 8 skulls have been found thus far, so my question to you is: What do you think about these ideas people have of the skulls?

There was an article about this in the May/June issue of Archaeology magazine. All known crystal skulls have turned out to be fakes produced in the 1800's for tourism purposes and because people had a fascination with the macabre.

Exactly. For those too lazy to read the article, the gist is that during the 19'th century a bunch of Mexicans made the crystal skulls for tourism purposes and touted them as ancient artifacts (much like the rest of the wares they peddled). Travelers bought the skulls, thought they were cool and made all sorts of legends to go with them. People had quite the fascination with darkly things of that nature, so they were all the rage.
So current-day scientists have been analyzing all known skulls they can get their hands on, and they're all elaborate fakes. The tools used to carve the crystal are simply too advanced (by 1800's standards) to have been used back in ancient times when they are claimed to have been made.
tl;dr version: they're fake, the Mexicans ripped off tourists, and the Mayan calendar is a load of crap.

well actually those tourist didn't get ripped off considering they were made completely out of quarts crystal, making them very valuble either way. But in any case. there are scientists that still study and search for these skulls, mainly those that are in search of extra terestrial life or a way to disprove human evolution, but they are still out there. There was actually a documentary in favor of the crystal skulls' supernatural beginings released just before the indiana jones movie.
(Though I do not believe in these stories, I feel obligated to put them out for discussion.)

lolwut? Quartz isn't valuable in the least. It's the most abundant material on the earth, actually, making anything made out of it completely valueless. I thought basic physical science in high school taught kids these things.

There are MUCH more efficient and sensible ways to search for extra terrestrial life...like say, looking at microbes on Mars and crap like that. Any scientist seriously researching aliens and crystal skulls to disprove evolution is a crackpot.

nah I'm just puting out the arguments in the documentary.
and the fact that the skulls are solid peices of quartz crystal does make them valunle in the sense of the difficulty in producing such an object, especially the way some were made to bend light in the direction of the eyes and mouth. it's the difficulty of the craftsmanship with the size of the skulls that make so valuble
