School Massacre Kauhajoki

I don't know if this has been published to the world yet but there's been yet another school massacre here in Finland. This time in a school in Kauhajoki. So far there have been 11 victims, don't know if the shooter is counted within that number, but he died later in hospital after shooting himself in the head.

Now, this is the 2nd school massacre here in Finland within a year, the previous one being the one that took place last November 2007. I myself think this is getting out of hand and that the politics really should've done something after the first one, but of course they didn't... What's your opinion on this?

I forgot to mention that the killer had put videos on Youtube the day earlier with him shooting with his gun, the police had noticed this, taken him in for an interrogation but concluded that he had no intention of doing something like this.

Finland seems a somewhat random place for a massacre, it isn't the place I would have though such things would happen.

Anyway, condolences to all died and their families. Massacres are difficult to stop though, mainly because you don't know they are going to do it, it isn't really something that is planned out thoroughly...I don't think. Most of the massacres are just someone who has lost it and goes into a school shooting people due to a spur of the moment thing.

However, if they want to stop this happening then what they first need to find out is why these people are going to school into shooting people. Find out that and the government, police w/e will be one step closer to what they need to do to stop it.

I heard about this earlier and was shocked, Finland always seemed like such a quiet, peaceful country, and I would have never expected a tragedy like this to occur in Finland. It's totally unexpected. I don't know what gun control is like over in Finland, but if the police talked to him about it the day before...he really should have had his gun taken off him, and then prevented from buying more guns...

People here can get their gun license pretty easily seeing as there's a lot of hunting going on here, unfortunately. The police should've taken his gun and license seeing as that threat on youtube was identical to the other one that took place last November. =/

Violence like this is becoming increasingly more common. You don't want your schools to install metal detectors that every student must pass through each day, but the fact of the matter is that school is no longer a safe place to be. Regardless of whether one possesses a gun license or not, it's rather easy to acquire a firearm somehow.

In this case, the massacre should have been stopped. I'm not sure how old you have to be to legally own a gun in Finland, but if students can be allowed to possess them after interrogation, then something's wrong.

Finland has the third highest gun ownership in the world, and with it allows 15 year olds to own guns from what I read. I'm surprised that there aren't more shootings there.

I don't think things like this can be stopped, they're really just a part of life. Yes, they are sad, but unpreventable.

I completely agree with you. It's outrageous that there hasn't been any changes in the gun law after the first incident.

I just saw this story on the news and I must say that it is completely ridiculous that the police allowed him to keep his gun. The video that he posted on Youtube was quite disturbing and I think it was clear that something like this was going to happen.

Apparently he had petrol bombs as well so I assume that he had made them over time and was storing them in his house. Which leads me to ask as to whether or not the police even searched his house after the interrogation.

I don't know, but from what I've seen, the event could have been at least postponed and possibly prevented if the police had taken a better course of action.

What I said to myself. There are no conflicts that I know of, it's economy is great, no religious bull and what not... How do kids get this way in that kind of an environment?
And why do Finish people want to own guns, is the crime rate that high?

I'm pretty sure about that if no one said anything about the previous one,
there wouldn't have been anything like that this year.

And now there are so many people joking about it and making same kind of youtube videos just for fun, must be annoying for some people when they have to check if something's really going to happen. And then trying to spot the real threats.
Well, it's just the media. I blame it.

Anyway, I don't understand that kind of people who are doing that, how does it help them? x( They know they are able to kill maybe only a few people "because they're ruining the world" or something. So, why are they doing it, there are looots of people.

And well, I don't really care when something like this happens, doesn't affect anything in me. "Well, it happened, just stop talking about it already." I just can't understand how these things make some people cry in Finland (except now in Kauhajoki)

I'm sure there will be more "threats" soon anyway, like there's been many in one year.
