Oil Drilling in Alaska

The United States government want's to drill for oil in Alaska. This will provide cheaper gas costs to the citizens of this fine country, but will also destroy habitats for many endangered species. =( I would be thoroughly excited to hear my fellow forumers opinions on this touchy subject.

I personally believe that we should not drill for oil in the habitat for endangered animals. I believe we should invest the money instead on searches for alternative fuels, like solar and geothermal energy.

Alaska is part of the US, so naturally the federal government and the state government decide what is best.
However there is something like 200 years worth of oil in Alaska, or so I heard.
This will help to reduce the very high fuel prices. This means it will be considerably cheaper and easier to research new forms of energy. Perhaps some of the urgency will be gone, but it'll still be easier.
Also I don't really care about polar bears.

Even if we did not harm the native species of Alaska, the oil would just end up polluting our unstable atmosphere. This would lead to all sorts of problems including but not limited to Global Warming.

And goodness knows we don't want that.

-Thread moved to 'Sleeping Forest'-

To be honest I don't know how high American oil prices are (although they have got up drastically over here) but either way, a lot of people will be more concerned about being able to pay for fuel over the environment. Again, I don't know how affected people are in America by high fuel prices but in the UK our government has already admitted that fuel prices are going to hit poorer drivers quite hard.

Saying that depending on how much oil we can get out of it could raise or decrease the price of oil depending how much oil we have at the time and also how much companies etc are willing to pay for it. Albeit, I would imagine the prices would probably go down in America.

Although I don't think anyone is happy about polluting the environment it has been something we have been doing for generations and it's something we have and will most likely have to continue to live with.

...I'm not really that informed when it comes to oil and pricing xD

(Feel free to move this thread if necessary, it just seemed fitting to be here at the time)

As if the environment hasn't been raped enough, Kiwi on an environmental high horse, change the song. But in saying that the drilling is unfortunately a necessary evil. For the moment there are no viable forms of alternative fuel; bio-fuel on a large scale would cause more problems than it would solve, nobody knows how the fuck to get at gas hydrates without blowing things up, natural gas is not exactly easy to transport, we won't see fusion power for 50 years at the very very least and the only solar plant big enough to power a city isn't even finished yet.

I think that given the current Global climate with reagrds to oil and the general credit crunch, the supply of oil needs to be increased in order for prices to subside and (espeicially in the UK) being some optimism about commodities in the future.

It is perhaps a necessary evil that the habitats of animals need to be destroyed in order to get to the oil tables. And as its been mentioned, so far there isn't a safe, cheap and viable alternative to producing power.

But i do like polar bears.

Hm. It's a tough one but I'm going to have to agree that it's necessary for the welfare of our economy. If fuel prices get any higher, they'll be unaffordable for all but the wealthy, soon. It's a sad state of affairs that various habitats will be disturbed but, at the end of the day, we're going to need that fuel. It's all about priorities and survival of the fittest - currently, we're the fittest (and I'm not referring to obesity and/or the lack thereof) and we survive by using these fuels. That fuel is going to be harvested for the good of mankind.

Besides, once all of the fuel has been depleted at that particular location, we can move on and allow nature to return to normal, by which point, we may have developed new ways by which we can power our society. We all know that the fossil fuels are finite and this might just buy us enough time to perfect the hydrogen-powered car and suchlike.

Im in favor of the drilling, the endangered species thing is pure speculation according to what i've been told. Endangered species extinction is sad, and i will be the first to say we should help them, but when it interferes with other peoples lives thats when it gets ridicolous. Plus...in the past million years many endangered species have become extinct due to natural causes. Why not just move the animals to a safe location, then both parties are pleased . We could also try to find a better energy source, as of now Oil and Coal seem to be the favorite & most effective, both of which are supposed contributions to pollution.

And as for as Global Warming, come on! Al Gore pollutes the world with his very luxurious private jet, limo, and mine, his house also uses up the same electricity as X amount of houses(forget number >.>), which doesn't really help the message hes trying to preach. But I think we should take small steps to making things better, even Bush which shocked me lives in an environmentally safe house .
