If there was a draft...

If there was an army draft, how would it change your view on politics and everything else going on in the world?

This was the question posed to us by our U.S. history teacher a couple months ago.

Discuss and provide answers.

id expect you'd get a lot of draft dodging, america wouldnt have the hypocrisy that they had during he vietnam war so they wouldnt look as bad.

it would make america look bad, that the might of the world's only super power cant beat some terrorists in Iraq. it may put pressure on britain and australia to send additional troops to iraq, and its definetly not want the american economy needs, arguably, its in recession, so conscripting people to fight in a war far away will only exacerbate it.

but a draft raises an important question, would women be conscripted too?

I'm still rather active in keeping up with politics, so, really, nothing would change if there was a draft.

America, however, would be rather chaotic, with their protests against the draft.

well in all reality. a draft will not ahppen. it has been getting brought up since i was in high school and i graduated in 1999. its too problematic, being as women would be involved in the draft as well.

one thing you may notice. the miliatry's ar egetting less peole and more unmanned than ever before. so theer is being less of a demand for soldiers.

in order for there to be a draft. teh u.s. would have to sustain a heavy, loss in military casulties..

Though I don't believe in the whole "DRAFT" concept. I do agree wit seddy on the whole "women should be drafted, too" concept.
Its only fair.
But i see no need for a draft.
America will go crazy, and whoever is in the oval office during that time should be prepared for the postests and negative reactions of their citizens.

Of course there's no need for a draft yet, what with the comparatively small casualty list in relation to bigger wars, but I'm pretty sure that America will indeed protest this all since it seems that the war in Iraq is going nowhere as of late.

And...*cough* @ Contra Fates: what do you mean nothing would change if there was a draft?

There hasn't been a draft since 1973. Also, the voting age was reduced from 21 to 18 because of the draft. But I do not see the draft coming back anytime soon. The only reason the draft would come back would be a war similar to WWII.

Let me put it into your perspective.
Your 8 years old, your dad is just an average guy, with an average job, with a 2 hour commute or some garbage like that. Whatever he does, it's not the point. He makes all the money for the family, and keeps your mother, your siblings, and your pets all fed, clothed, entertained and in a house.

Then, there's a draft.

He's taken away from his job, and is sent off to war. Meaning your mother no longer takes care for you, and she has to work.
And what happens if said father dies in combat? Your whole life crumbles, that's what. Your mother's never there, you can't get into collage... You're pretty much fucked. There's no fun anymore, only constant work just to survive.

That was the same exact thing that happened to thousands and thousands of families in WW2.

Now, tell me.... Do you still think drafts wouldn't change anything?

I don't think I would care at all because I would flee the country. I'll allow myself to be drafted when I'm fighting next to the President's Daughter.
