Let me put it into your perspective.
Your 8 years old, your dad is just an average guy, with an average job, with a 2 hour commute or some garbage like that. Whatever he does, it's not the point. He makes all the money for the family, and keeps your mother, your siblings, and your pets all fed, clothed, entertained and in a house.

Then, there's a draft.

He's taken away from his job, and is sent off to war. Meaning your mother no longer takes care for you, and she has to work.
And what happens if said father dies in combat? Your whole life crumbles, that's what. Your mother's never there, you can't get into collage... You're pretty much fucked. There's no fun anymore, only constant work just to survive.

That was the same exact thing that happened to thousands and thousands of families in WW2.

Now, tell me.... Do you still think drafts wouldn't change anything?
OTT much?

i think Contra Fates means that her political beliefs wouldnt be influenced/ changed and i doubt mine would either

an its a hypothetical question, z isnt saying there will be a draft, but what if there was one

I said MY POLITICAL VIEWS would not change.

Of course the world itself would be in disarray if we actually needed to call for a draft, because that would mean it was World War III. We'd need a widespread war of that magnitude for a draft in the United States.

My bad. o.O
I thought when you said political views it meant extending all the way to how you view everything else. *notes*

Anyways, alright, I agree that the situation would have to be so bad, but it wasn't so bad in Vietnam now was it? In terms of casualties we were winning and in terms of support, our allies were all for it all in the name of containment.
The U.S. wasn't losing, and yet it started the draft.

People were circulating rumors about drafts a couple months ago. The Iraq was has stagnated. It's not usually the direness of a war that stimulates a call for a draft, but sometimes it's because the government feels a need to end a war quickly and to do so would mean a huge influx of troops to 'overwhelm' the enemy.

Right now, the Iraq was has gone stagnant. It doesn't seem like we're winning and yet all the stats say we are. Sounds kind of like *cough cough* Vietnam.

Well at that time not many men signed up for the military. So the country had to "force" them. Sucks huh. Kinda bended the term"freedom". It was a long war 1961-1975. So they just kept sending people until they saw an improvement to their advantage.

I'm seeing parallels all over. But I'm not posting those...

But if there were a draft in the near future, it wouldn't be because of a shortage of men or something (though I did hear something the other day about not having sufficient troops enlisted as regulars) but because Iraq is so vast that the army would have to cover huge areas.

Id definately dodge the draft since i think that im not going to sacrifice my life to further the gains of those fat cats that sent me there.
Like that dude said after the battle of the somme "millions of people died just to move the generals wine cabinate a foot to the east.

This was the question posed to us by our U.S. history teacher a couple months ago.

Discuss and provide answers.
The draft wouldn't affect me. Therefore, I would have no need to dodge the draft nor to change my beliefs on politics.

However, being a former soldier, I've noticed that people tend to retain whatever political beliefs they have while in the Army as they had before they joined. I have similar beliefs to what I had before I joined. The thing that swayed my beliefs was reading a book called "The CIA and the Cult of Intelligence". It made me reevaluate the motives of the war. I realized that certain things have been happening repeatedly for years... yet the public chooses to ignore it. I got the book while I was in Iraq, coincidentally. I still don't know whose it originally was... it was in the guys' quarters. I saw it while I was visiting and no one claimed it.

The US had a draft long before Vietnam became an all out war. So that argument does not hold. The main reason for the draft was the reconstruction of Europe and Japan after WWII and the Cold War. Of course there was also the conflict in Korea that caused a need for troops to maintain the border at the 38th parallel in Korea. Which was still considered Hazardess Duty. There were also a lot of troops sent to Germany to maintain the border there as well. When a person was drafted at that time, they either went to Korea, Germany or Vietnam. The most unfortunate ended up in Vietnam.
