I just started giving blood this year and I gave some twice so far. I might keep giving blood too. I don't like needles but I can at least tolerate them. Is it strange to want to keep a bag of your own blood to take home with you?

Organs, on the other hand, I would only give to someone close to me. I'm not noble enough to give to a stranger.

I would, and will, give all of my viable organs away to anyone who may need them (following the typical protocol of "first come, first serve" of course).

I don't, however, see anything noble in the act. Honestly, it's just a matter of not being ridiculously selfish. You don't need your organs after you die any more than you need, say, money, or oxygen for that matter. Frankly, I don't think people should even have a choice (barring religious issues, and possibly family tradition... should your family have the tradition of sharing your no longer functioning organs O_o).

If you don't leave your money or other worldly belongings to someone in a legal will, the government takes them without asking. Why should your organs be any different?

EDIT: Since the issue was brought up, I also donate blood. I don't need all of it to live a healthy life (in fact, giving blood is healthy for you), so why not give it to someone who can use it, barring abnormalities/disease of course. Again, I see nothing noble about it however, with the possible exception of those with extreme fear of needles.

I'm sorry, there's been a misunderstanding. Actually, I'm more referring to the fact that giving a vital organ (in this case, kidneys) to someone else (stranger or family member) while you are still living IS noble in my eyes.

You are giving another kidney to someone else and that in itself can be dangerous to you if let's say, your one other remaining kidney goes bad...what then? You're pretty much screwed because you've already given your other one to someone else. That is what I meant by noble...basically, you've decreased your chance of living/surviving if something like that were to happen. And you are aware of this knowledge, yet choose to give that one kidney away anyway. Of course, let's not forget the fact that you are willing to give a part of yourself and go through the pain while you are still living and saving someone else's life. Also, based on most cases, it is much harder for the doner during the recovery process than it is for the recipient.

But then again, it's all based entirely on my opinion. To me, that is noble.
