Anti-Alcoholism Campaigns.
I was watching 8 out of 10 Cats on telly the other night and they touched on an issue I wanted to bring to the forum. They were speaking about the Government's plans to put pictures of destroyed livers on bottles and cans of alcohol.
What are your views on this?
I'm pretty against such an action, to be honest. If I'm on a night out (my age is irrelevant btw ) then the last thing I want to see is a vile picture of a decayed, internal organ on an otherwise enjoyable drink. In fairness, as well, if they want to highlight the dangers of alcohol consumption, wouldn't it be just as effective to put pictures of burned bodies on ovens/chip pans, pictures of destroyed aircrafts on every plane journey or a drowned body in every swimming pool?
They want to tackle issues --fair enough-- but I think they're going about it the wrong way - and this includes raising the age of off-licence sales of alcohol to 21.

Yeah, they already have the 21 law over here. They're thinking of lowering it to 18, but with MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) up their arse about it, it's probably not going to happen.
And this ad campaign you're talking about makes me think of this one I saw for, like, tobacco or meth or something form another country. It was about that grotesque.
I agree with you. If they do that, they might as well put pictures of what all could happen to people using nearly anything.

I heard about this a while ago and thought that it's a bit stupid, because if you're out then you get drinks in glasses, where there won't be any pictures so the effect is somewhat lost.
I can see the reasoning for it though, and it could prove to be a good idea. Warning slogans on cigarette packets have apparently reduced the number of smokers, so in theory it should work here too.

It seems a step to far to me. Shouldn't they be doing what they do with cigarettes and put written warnings on the products before they go making us feel ill? After all, drinking is no more of a bad habit than smoking.
But to be honest, I have confidence the plan won't go through, because I'm pretty sure the companies that produce alcoholic beverages will do everything within their power to fight against it, after all, it ain't gonna do any good for business if the pictures on the beverages turn the customers right off.

Well there's a difference between alcoholism and all those examples you gave, so it's not really fair to compare. All those other examples were accidents that could happen when doing everyday things, whereas a destroyed liver is what WILL happen over time if you drink excessively. And, it's completely self-inflicted and personally I think that alcoholics deserve a ruined liver, whereas a plane full of passengers in a plane crash don't exactly deserve to die because it wasn't their fault at all.

They do actually put pictures of destroyed lungs etc on ciggarette packets here, so doing the same with alcohol is, for want of a better word, fair.
Also tobacco companies have a lot more lobbying power than alcohol companies, so if they can't stop it, I doubt if alcohol companies can either.
It doesn't bother me to be honest, when I'm drinking I don't really look at the label of what I'm drinking.
