Simply copying and pasting smilies just isn't enough sadly. You have to input the code manually. Though considering how you like to respond to bits and pieces from numerous posts, you'd be better off using the multi-quote feature. Keeps everything all lovely an' stuff. ;p
Auto-merge is kind of useful, but it gets in the way for staff. Perhaps we should be exempt from it?
