Well, ok, I'll start at the begining. I broke up with my girlfriend a couple of months ago after 7 years and I found it really hard. Friends helped to a certain extent but they all knew her as well as me so I went to a chat room and met a wonderfull woman. 2 years older than me and so understanding as she had recently split with her boyfriend after 5 years.

We exchanged e-mails (which I rarely do!) and then photos (which I really, really never do!) and then she asked for my number, so I gave her my mobile.

She called every night (she was from Detroit, I'm English). She sounded as lovely as she was in her e-mails, not a hairy biker as I feared!

Anyway, we talked about some pretty deep things and she really helped me out, and then guess what.... I get an e-mail, she's not 35, she's 58. Why do people do this? I hate dishonesty. If she had been honest at the start then I would have still chatted to her but I thought I'd found somebody of my age who really connected with me.

So I'm asking if any of you guys (or girls) have had similar things happen.

Honesty man, its all I ask.

Oh wow. I agree, why cant people be honest?
I mainly think people lie about things like that because the Internet has no visual communication, unless you webcam, so some people create a persona for themsleves. They lie about their age, name, apperance because they want to feel better about themselves.

I think this woman lied about her age because you were yougn and I guess some people see the Internet as something for the younger generation, so maybe she wanted to fit into it.

Doesnt she look that old, cause of the pictures?

Apparently the pic was taken 10 years ago. It did look a little "posed". The truth is I didn't give a damn what she looked like. Why put yourself through that? Look at my profile to the left, it says Im 33, thats because I am! Why would I want to pretend to be 23? or 16?

Take me as I am. Argue with me, insult me, piss me off, challenge me, change my mind..... all good by me, but dishonesty is the only thing I cannot tollerate.

Whoa, that really sucks. I mean, not because of her age but because you were lied to. I know you probably would've talked to her anyway despite her age because you want someone to listen, and that's fine. But she took advantage of the Internet and the sake of being anonymous. At least she told you the truth in the end though...it could've been worse. I mean, she could've kept this up for months or years even, if she was really that desperate. Did she really sounded like a 35 year old?

So why do people do it indeed? Same reason that Lauren stated in her post. She probably just wanted to be accepted and fit in to what's popular. Also, consider the fact that she probably just did it out of boredom or fun in the first place...but once she got to actually know you, she obviously felt guilty and told you the truth. That takes a lot of guts...

I've never had this happened to me before, but I know a couple of friends who've been in the same situation. I can say that it probably hurt them...and then got angry about it. But I think shock and disbelief was their first reaction.

A lot of good points there Mit,

I am thankfull that she told me the truth. It must indeed have taken courage. Amazingly she sounded so young, by her voice I would have thought younger than 35! I just think she saw somthing in me that perhaps she never had in her own life so I feel guilty for terminating our conversations. But no, Im done with lies. I stand by that.
