college advice

Hiya there Um, I'm having quite a dilemma here trying to decide about college, so i figured i might as well see if any of you on here have any good advice.

I've already attended a community college for one year, but i got kind of tired of it...so i went to the university here in town for a semester....and well, that was pretty much the worst scholastic experience since high school. So i dropped out and i've been out of school since January, and i've been working at Arby's (it's the best i can find around here). I know i want to go back to college, because i do NOT want to spend my life in Arby's and end up like my manager, and as bogus as college is, it's still pretty much necessary to get any decent job.

So here's my problem: it's not that i cant pick a college around here, we do have a couple good ones, it's just that i have NO idea what i want to do! Nothing at all interests me, and i dont want to go back to college and waste my time and parents' money when i dont even have a goal in mind...the only things i'm talented in are english and writing, i'm decent at everything else except science, and i'm godawful at math (what's worse is i have to take another remedial course in algebra, 0850), but...even what i'm good at doesnt interest me...

So do you guys have any suggestions of what i can do? I'm getting really sick of working at Arby's, it's not exactly something i can take pride in or wake up to everyday and think "ah, another fulfilling day", but i know when i go back to college i'm going to have to set my mind to it and make myself focus, so i want some semblance of a goal in mind.

Oh wow! Same boat and I mean same boat! I went to uni straight after college, transfered to another uni after 2 years and now Ive dropped out of this one after only a year. Because both courses werent suited for me, creative writing and popular culture. Now Im trying to get a full time job and take a gap year out and hopefully apply in Jan for a film course somewhere cause I only know film, computer games and music.

Chosing a course that is perfect and right for you can be beyond tricky, but you enjoy writing and english, so perhaps something that looks at literature and wiritng a novel. Be warned though, I did a writing course and it was the absolute pits! We were promised writers and publishers to come in and explain the business to us, but zippo.

I do wish you luck as it can be a hassle chosing a great and fulfilling course.

Nothing interests you? You mention that you're apt at both writing ad English... do the courses revolving around them not appeal either?

College is a drag, yes, but like you said yourself: it's a necessity if you want to progress further. Gaining experience in work obviously does not suit your tastes, so your only real option is getting the qualifications you need. Math may seem daunting, but it's not he end of the world if you don't do brilliantly at it; as long as you have skills which you can fully express as advantageous to your employer.

I had no clue what I wanted to do before I attended college, as the concept of attending college for such a long time was... off-putting. However I forced myself through it, and eventually came to enjoy my experience. You might not have had enough time to come to appreciate college, so... try to stick with it next time should you decide to.

A necessity is a necessity. Make the best of what few options you have; life won't be so simple later on. Just note that college -although disliked- will get you somewhere.

My literature class last semester was awful. At first it seemed like it'd be good, but after a while the prof started to turn into a real prick and a perv. He wouldnt answer ANY questions we had about essays, not even when we asked him how the hell he wanted us to write them, so half the class failed because he never told us what he wanted. Also, EVERY story or poem we read, he would always manage to find some sort of sexual meaning in the subtext, it was ridiculous.

Nope, nothing revolving around english or writing interests me either. Everything just completely bores me. Actually i think i failed to mention that the one thing i DO like is acting...i'd rather like to get into that, but i need to find a school around here with a good acting program. But aside from that...yeah, everything bores me. Videogame design would be pretty cool, but i know there's no way i could ever do that, it would require too much math and computer knowledge (i cant even figure out HTML, there's no way i can figure out JavaScript or C+ coding).

Yeah, gaining work experience is not for me, at least not in a fast food place (and all the retail places around here keep their employees so i never get hired). I'd rather just be able to jump into a good job position with good pay (and not have to deal with illiterate rednecks). I've just always hated school and it's reeeeeally hard for me to find motivation in a system thats so flawed. You're right though, i just gotta remember that while it may suck it will get me somewhere, whereas fast food...most likely wont. I mean sure i could advance through the ranks and become like a district manager or something and make good money that way...but i soooo do not have the patience for that.
