I've also seen a lot of people call it pretty mediocre as far as Strategy RPGs go, but it seems pretty good to me. Especially if you compare it to Tactics Advance.

You can get it really cheap on eBay, like $30 and less. Kinda odd considering it's rare in stores, I hope the one you get is $30 or less else you're being scammed.

Final Fantasy Tactics, during it's time wasn't really underrated at all, because it was extremely popular and highly demanded. It gained excellent reviews all over the place, and many people played it.
However, as the years wore on by, I believe it became more underrated, because newer gen. of FF players looking at the game are like "wtf, big heads...small bodies?!" "what kind of battle system is this?!"
Yes, many where turned off, however, I guess people never really tried to realize that Final Fantasy Tactics is a series of it's own, and thus plays vastly different from the Original Series. The Battle System was incredible and had alot of do with positioning your characters, because remember, to where you put them to attack will depend on how much more damage they may do.
The storyline was incredible, infact, it has to rank amongst one of the best storylines for a FF game ever. There was so much plot twist, so much betrayals and suspence, a protagonist early would later be revealed as an antagonist. It was great and kept you in your seat.
The Multi-Job Classes although not new was a great addition, because it allowed for some excellent customizations. Things like Blade Grasp where Top Tier skills, and combinations like Caculator+Mage ='s Elite, while someone like Orlandu w/ Excalibur ='s God Tier.
Honestly, back in 1998 when this game came out it was well recieved, its just that in later newer generations eyes, this game doesn't look quite the effort, but believe me in 1998, alot of people played it, and loved it.

I’m not sure about it being underrated, but it’s definitely a worthwhile and enjoyable game, if one has yet to play it. Like most have said, it did have a really good story as well as a great set of characters. The battle/Job system truly is one of the best (thorough) in the series. It is and always will be, one of my PS1 favorites.

I really enjoyed FFT. It's another example that ubersteller graphics do not make a game... Gameplay makes a game

I agree. I didn't even get this game until about 3 months ago and I saw it at a GameStop and I figured I would give it a try. I didn't think it was too bad the first time through and I didn't even finish it then cause I wanted to restart and set up my characters better. I didn't really realize how much I liked this game until I beat it.

I definitly loved the strategy portion of the game and i definitly think its is underatted because i never hear anyone say that they like this game. Ive beaten this game over 5 times now and still get stuck on a few spots. Ive gotten cloud to only lvl 16 on best because its too hard and I dont think i have beaten Deep Dungeon quite yet (second last lvl)

As others have said before, this game rocks. The story never got old and when you thought you had it all figured out, somebody like Delita says something that makes you think "what the hell!?". Gotta admit, I was quite surprised when Gafgarion turned on me. I actually liked him. The combat system was great - you weren't just hitting attack over and over again. My only real complaint is that the story missions were pathetically easy. None of those enemies leveled up when you did. Random encounters would usually be a few levels above and below you, but these guys maxed out around 40. You'd think the last few fights would be epic, right? And the fact that if you saved your file when at the last chain of fights, that file is pretty much unplayable. That pissed me off (party of lvl 99's). Other then that, it's my favorite FF.
