I beat FFT a long time ago so i haven't played the new version.
First off, FFT is second only to FF7 in my book. It's strongest point is its story and gameplay. The story is very complex and sometimes harsh with strong themes of loyalties, betrayals, religious corruption and political strife. It is Final Fantasy in the Medieval times. There are a large number of characters overall and i think the numerous villains and side characters were a strong point. One drawback is that character development pretty much stops once you get a special character on your team, except for Ramza the lead protagonist who has a good character arc. A good game, movie or book makes you love or hates its characters, and if you don't hate Algus, and feel some compassion for Delita than something is wrong with your brain.
The Gameplay takes some getting used to as it is different from the numbered final fantasies, but once you do customizing your own small army of warriors is a blast with tons of skills, abilities, and equipment. The battles can be long and a little slow in that you have to position your troops for success but that is the tactics aspect of the game. It is challenging throughout, in fact one of the hardest missions is the 4th battle (dang you dorter trade city!)
If you have a PSP pick up the new version if you have never played it. New cutscenes and an extra cameo can't hurt it, and i'm sure they fixed the typo's in the original.

One of the best games i've played! 9.5/10!
No, Final Fantasy is Final Fantasy, in Medieval Times. In fact, half of all Final Fantasy games were medieval. I'm guessing you've only played newer ones?
Dorter Trade City was not hard at all, really. Bed Desert, Wiegraf, and others were very hard.

Battles are certainly not slow after awhile.
Actually he is right. Well over half of the Final Fantasys were semi post apocalyptic, and when it was not then it was in futuristic.
FF1 medieval

Ok I goofed it is mostly futuristic.
As for my review I have to say that it was a great game for it's time. the only problem I had was that the calculators could own everything with relative ease.

I played the PSP version
Gameplay: 8/10
The gameplay was different, but totally fun. The camera angles wer awkward at times, and the spells wer sumtimes slow and tedious. It was probably the hardest FF game ive completed.
Graphics: 8/10
The best pixel graphics ive ever seen, still great for the psp. backrounds wer good maybe couldve been better.
Story: 9/10
The story is the heart and soul of Tactics, back stabbing, loyalty, and surprises will make u say "wow" outloud.
Music: 9/10
Yet again, an amazing mater piece work of art, words cannot describe these great pieces oif work.
Overall: 8.5/10
I really wish this game was FF11 instead of the online game. I dont mind their being an online game, but it shouldnt be a number, jus FF online.

This is definitely on my top 3 list of not only Final Fantasies, but RPGs(Chrono Trigger and my last on the top three always changes).
The story is breathtaking even though at times translations were a bit iffy, luckily gamefaq has a more accurate(I hope) translation.
I absolutely love the battle system coupled with the job system. It's a step away from the traditional Final Fantasy game and can be quite challenging.
Music, as with all other Final Fantasies, is incredible.
With near endless character and job combinations this game's replay value is high.
