I only found the game difficult when i played it my first time, and i realized at the woods before Dorter that enemies level with you...
Then i started going mad on levels. Always at some levels higher than those i was about to meet. Even the final battle, all my enemies were around lv50 or so and i was already at the max level, 99.
So, to me, it would be safe to assume i find the game one of the simplest among all.

okay i have it for PSP too, andthe only boss/battle i found hard was the one where you fight the blond haired dude- what was his name.. you know the guy that was the leader of the corpse brigade and his sis was Milueda...ANYWAY the battle where you fight him one on one. other than that it was allright.

This game was purely tactical, thats all. If you check your surroundings, use the appropriate skill sets, and focus your attacks you'll be fine.
First off I highly recommend MAXING squire right off the bat, don't do anything until you have JP up, and as many self boosts as you can get. Eventually as squire Ramza gets a skill that does all the self-boosts at once, not to mention Squire is the only class that can get ultima. Max it out!
You can spend entire battles running from enemies and just self-boosting. Or you can trap the last enemy and have a chemist heal while the rest of your party takes turns self-boosting. It gets you tons of JP this way!
You can practically get all the necessary skills for squire before the end of the first real fight!
Second, make sure you assess the class your going into. A monk has a lot of natural strengths and a huge glaring weakness of no defense. So level up your knight to get the skill that lets you wear armor. You get a heavy hitting monk with the tank like defense of a knight!
Once you finish your first battle, look at all the guys you have and decide on a core party. Usually you will have a few really good characters and a couple really crappy ones...the way you can tell is by their bravery and faith. Make sure you have the highest bravery you can and the lowest faith you can for the pure fighters, while the magic users should be the highest faith and bravery you can find.
This isn't tooo terribly important but it helps. And don't worry, Ramza eventually gets a skill that lets you super boost everyone's faith and bravery. For every 10 points of bravery/faith boosted in a battle it will equate to 1 point of permanent faith/bravery.
Use 'lure' tactics. Set up a formation that will be far enough back to make your enemies come to you. Don't worry about guest characters if you don't have to they usually can't die (unless they are a condition). If your enemies are coming to you, you can spend more time self-boosting and your reaction time will actually be faster because you aren't moving AND taking an action. When they finally reach you just focus your attack on one enemy at a time and you'll win easy.
Check your opponents weapons and armor! Always read what weapon and armor they have and try your best to steal/pick up what you can from them. Its a good idea to scout out the equipment because usually they have better stuff than you can buy in stores.
Here's a tip for people who want to train up magic user's. Lets say you have a master black mage who is training up some other skill set and need to make another master black mage for the black knight job... Revert the master black mage to black mage and have them cast their higher jp cost spells on the unmastered black mage over and over again, while the character trying to make black mage should just be self-boosting/healing. Sometimes your unmastered black mage will pick up skills just by having them used on him.
So yeah, I loved tactics, its a great game and its highly challenging. I found it difficult the first time I played through, but once I started learning the system it became a lot less frustrating.

You guys claimed Wiegraf to be difficult huh?
Well, a tip.
As mentioned above already, you simply get to a higher level than the enemies. Once that is achieved, whatever class you are (Preferably not a magick-using class on Ramza), Wiegraf's a piece of cake waiting to be bitten!
If you're worried about health, don't hesitate to use items! You're up against Belias right after that anyway

the game wasnt that hard for me though. i guess because im the type of person who spends hours over training to zip past the stage.for the Dorter stage,i over trained(i belive my characters were lv.8)i made my team most Blackmages with white magic set in. trust me it works. blackmagic is pretty strong in that game. but since you beat it you should be ok. just take some time to train and upgrade equiment. and soon you'll have to fight Gafgorion ALOT! hes HARD.

the first time i played the game i got stuck at dorter slums and at the time i was still massing chemists and knights like a noob, even though the guide tells you thats a good idea i just couldnt kill the black mages fast enough who later nearly one shot me cause of my units super high faith ratings. took me a couple tries but i got lucky with my units placement on the map and won!. the rest of the game i thought was real easy compared to the begining fights you have to go through mostly because of the over powered units you get later on.

Maybe my characters aren't strong enough?
Hmmm...It is hard...
But sometimes it can be average difficulty
