Umm....I'm pretty sure you can't because the whole point of him coming out of the machine is so you can keep him.

Yea, you can't. So who knows what happens to him. It's a shame we didn't see him in FFXII... but that would've been pre-Tactics making it impossible for him to make an appearance.

You can't send him back so you can like actually keep him in use on your team 
but the fact that he doesn't go back is a bit of a gaping plot whole...unless you regard tactics as AU or not canon...

Although it would be nice to get a bit more insider and a few more storyline and cut-secenes on Cloud, he is a "secret character", meaning, that you can keep him and the only to ways to remove him permenantly are to
1.In a battle when his soul turns into a crystal.
2. when you remove him manualy.
