The best technique is to charge into battle. Thats what ive always done and I always end with no characters dead because they look out for eachother.

*hmmm really? what were your opponents? are they humans? have you encountered a party of red and black chocobos? or three headed dragons and tiamats?

Yeah, speaking of that, I forget the name of the brook or river, but up in the north east corner you have this battle where you get attacked by about 3 or 4 yellow chocos, 2 or 3 red chocos, and sometimes a black one and a pig as well! I got so frustrated 'cuz I kept getting wiped out so I just used the old technique of going elsewhere and just levelling up to get stronger. But how I finally one,I think I just got lucky and hit it when there was only one red chocobos, and the rest were yellow, I think there was something else too, but I forget what it was lol.
I like to train all of my new players, even the guest ones like Orlandau and Agrias, as chemists. I even like to get them up to master level. That way, even if they can't do anything else, they can use an X-potion or a gold needle or what have you.

Im guessing you're talking about Finnath Creek, or Lake Poescas.

Yes i did this too, So that they could use the elixers that i had. Also so they all could use my X-Potions and Ethers. I currently have Orlandu at lvl 99 with almost all classes mastered so hes my powerhouse now hah.
(Beat the game ending with Ramza at lvl 90 )

Battle techniques? That's easy. Have a balanced offense. I usually take Ramza (a monk, though mostly just in the plot based battles), a lancer/monk, a samurai/monk, Agrias, Beowulf, and a combination of either a wizard or an archer and go in.
Easy tip, never EVER put your All-Weak team in a battle since the monsters are always at or above the level of your highest level.
Quick tips:
Lancer Jump ability - check the CT. If it is over 50, don't Jump, just leave it be or use some other technique because you'd be wasting your time.
Check the 'Turn' box when you're casting magic or using 'Charge'. Then check your target's CT. Again, if opponent's CT is higher than 50, and the 'Turn' column on your magic/charge screen says 4 or more, don't do it. You're going to miss.
Mobility is key. The farther your character can move the better. Most of the time splitting the opponent party in two by moving one character left and the other right is pretty useful.
Watch the hit percentage. If it's above 70 percent, good chance you're going to hit. Less than that and maybe you have to rethink.

Lol, the moment i got Orlandu, whatever battle techniques i ever had was lopsided...
I could send Orlandu out himself in a one man show and yet win against the horde...

i'm not too far in the game unfortunately however i tend to make ramza a mediator with equip armor skill so he won't you know DIE then i try to get the rest of my chars to really powerful classes like geomancer and lancer and such. then i own everything at the beginning and later in the game i got high levels so they can't beat me. i think it's best to get a chocobo as soon as possible so you can have mounts so my Ramza acts as mediator until later in the game where i turn him full knight and kill everything. otherwise, it's best to switch out the chars you start with for guest chars in battle.

*hmmm thats some good advice there my friend but if youd only depend on your "balanced offense" team then i guarantee you wont last with the tough battles. let meeeeee assess the situation hehehe...
*first off i agree having a monk will be very beneficial for any team, so this is a CHECK! yay but having melee attackers like lancer and samurai is a big no no for meeee. ya see melee dudes often get countered, and even if your a lancer he still attacks with 2 spaces and needs to get close to the enemy,he can get gang banged and end up dead! and also i dont recommend using wizards and other magical casters cause theyre just a waste of time. but theyre flashy though with summons, ultima and holy but i guarantee youd get wiped out with only a group of chocobos, theyll attack from all sides and youd never get the chance to cast your spells ...
*as ive said before i recommend the perfect strategy for all battles is attack and assail with ninja job and just in case you encounter damage..(which i doubt youll have) have a monk
*im not saying your strategy is wrong but there are weaknesses in it maybe it works for you so i wont entirely disagree with your strategy peace bro!

*well its true Orlandu is one super mega powerhouse as a member but hes not perfect! what if you encounter squids that shoot confusion and berserk then your sooo called knight in shining armor Orlandu will kill your party instead!
