It's been almost three years now since I have been out of high school. I have finally figured out what I want to be and what I would like to do when it comes to my career. After exploring the ideas of being a doctor, nurse, graphic designer, lawyer, architecture, landscape designer, artist, singer, actress, and many more, I have finally decided that being an Interior designer is the right choice for me. About time I finally realize what I really want to do. Now all I need is the time to actually carry out my plans. =) I've only taken a couple of classes in college a few years back, and none related to Interior designing. I really hope this works out for me in the end.

So, what do YOU want to do? Or if you're already in college, what are you majoring in? Why did you choose that particular course?

As for me, here's why. I'm into that sort of stuff, I guess. I'd really like to venture on more towards that direction. The only thing I'm worried about are marketing sales and the skills needed. =/

Technical requirements:
* The ability to read and design blue prints
* Knowledge of color coordination and painting
* Difference between furniture brands and styles
* How to coordinate and organize a room to create a comfortable
* How to correctly estimate the length and size of materials needed
* How to correctly estimate the amount of paints or wallpapers needed
* How to maximize interior space to the room's advantage.
* How to correctly identify different types of furnishings, and to incorporate that knowledge into a legitimate design plan.
* How to create an environmental plan because this is a practical, conducive and aesthetic approach to your eventual goal of raising productivity, and selling your merchandise.
* How to explain space planning, lighting, layout and color schemes to your clients. People often like to know why you are doing the things that you are doing.
* How to arrange carpets, accessories, drapes and wall coverings.
* Knowledge of fine arts, sculptures, music etc. These will often be included in your design changes and must incorporate properly into the area. (you would not want to hang a Picasso in a Victorian themed room)

Business-related requirements
* How to communicate your ideas effectively to your client
* Basic marketing skills are needed to further your business

Currently, I'm majoring in Information Technology. I chose not to take the more advanced course due to fear of being overwhelmed, but it seems I'd have been able to ace it... or so I'm told by tutors.

So far, I've covered some major topics, like fine-tuning skills with all Microsoft applications, create websites, manipulate items in Adobe Photoshop, etc. My main subject is programming now, so I'm working in Visual Basic. Nifty stuff, and I'm hoping I can eventually put this knowledge to good use with a career in I.T. Doing what specifically? No idea. I'll be exploring my options depending on what grades I'll be getting, ranging from Fail, Pass, Merit or Distinction. I've been getting Distinctions in assignments so far, so hopefully I'll get enough points to progress into the above course.

I'll more than likely become a Video Game Designer though. I've been given a glimpse as to what it entails, and it intrigues me somewhat.

Ah, video game designer. Yes, I've always wanted to try my hands in that area, but I guess the fear of failing engulfs me since I heard it is a very competitive business. I took a year of CAD class in high school and the only thing I was able to create well was a pumpkin, teapot and a pencil. The rest of the kids were designing cars and cooler stuff. >.< But then again, I never really paid attention in that class anyway. =)

Hmm, but something related to video games intrigues me as well. It would be cool if I am able to design characters, world, and take part of creating a good storyline. But I really doubt I would make it. So I'm sticking with Interior design since I also love that idea. Been thinking about it since I was 10 years old, but you know how the mind takes detours and suddenly, we forget what it is we really want in the first place.

Well, I graduate from high school in 4 weeks, but I'm already in my career as a graphic designer (with web design on the side). It took about a year, but I've finally gotten somewhere with my work & that makes me really happy.

I never want to be in a job that I hate. When I go to work, I want the job to be something I enjoy. Hell, if I'm going to do it for the rest of my life, I might as well enjoy the ride, eh?

I still haven't decided what I want to do with my life, well, at least not something viable anyway....

Since leaving College I have been.......A Care Assistant (briefly as I hated it)
A Shop Assistant
A Video Consultant
A Factory Worker
A Barman (or should that be barperson?)
And now I am a Civil Servant

These are all just fillers until I decide...guess I better decide soon....

I do write short stories as a side bit, only had a few published though and not much money to be made there. Perhaps if I wrote a novel...what do you think?

Well LittleAngel, if you really want to, I say go for it. And it shouldn't matter whether you make big money or not. Like Ryker stated, might as well enjoy something you're doing while going through life. Your life shouldn't entirely revolve around $$$.

If you do write a novel, make sure you alert us here, as we'd be more than happy to pick up a copy

I started writing stories when I was in high school too, but those were just for fun even if I never finished them. I wasn't actually going to publish them.

My point is, I could've made money if I did publish it and made it big (though I doubt that would've been the case), but to me, writing stories is just something I enjoyed doing. I don't see it as a career though, but still...well, you get the idea. =)

That's awesome that you figured that out Mitsuki!

Right now, I'm studying to be an Occupational Therapist. I'll have to get my masters so it'll be a 5-5 1/2 year program.

At the moment Im doing a rather pointless course at university and to tell you the truth, it wont make a huge difference to the career I want which is writing. The others on my course are by far better writers then me and I dont think people would see my work as interesting. Yes its a degree, but sadly I doubt it will lanch me into the writing industry. Also Im a part time sales assistant at my local Sainsburys, just a job till I graduate from university.

After I graduate I hope to go into a full time job, earn enough cash and either go onto live in America or get a place of my own. Its just this country sucks TBH.
