They're two different games set in a similar universe but with their own individual stories and characters. Versus's gameplay is more Kingdom Hearts-like as opposed to FFXIII's.

This is my personal stance on the reviews here. I think Edge's 5/10 is a rather harsh score considering from what I've read (and that's a lot), it doesn't seem like a mediocre, average game at all. There are plenty of things to praise about the game. A 5/10 is a bit of an over-critical score. As for GamesRadar's 10/10 score, I see that as being too generous. It just sounds a little unrealistic to me. I don't like the sound of the minimalism that much and there have been complaints on other issues- so FFXIII does not seem to be a perfect game at all.

The game deserves more than a 5. Even if you gave the Story a 0, the Presentation is fantastic. There's no denying the game looks incredible. And whether or not you like the battle system is one thing, but the system isn't broken. It's a playable, gorgeous game. That's at least a 7 in my book. At the very least.

I think it's difficult to rate/criticise or even comment on other ratings without playing the game. So I'll wait until I've played it before I pass comment.
However not many games get as low as 5/10, which probably seems quite harsh given the consensus of other scores.

I'm not too surprised by this score, in fact I'd have been more surprised if it had got a 10. Although I haven't played the game yet the complaints that magazines have seem all too familiar, and, if this was any other game then I may well just accept what the critics have to say. Since I've been waiting so long for this though I'm a little more sceptical in my views on the ratings that the game is receiving.
All too often the number one complaint seems to be linearity, since when is that a negative word? I'm well aware that freedom can really enhance a game at times but why do games like Bayonetta (a great game, sure) get scores of around 9/10 when clearly it's linearity all the way? It makes me facepalm every time I see this down as a negative point, though I can understand that what some have essentially called a 20 hour tutorial may not be to everybody's taste.
At the end of the day I'e always liked exploring things in Final Fantasy games but the thing that draws me in personally is the storyline and characters, so I have pretty high hopes for FFXIII. I've been playing through FFX the past few days and the fact that you do travel in a straight line doesn't bother me in the slightest; in fact, I've been playing ti alongside FFVIII and there seems very little difference other than a world map being present. My one fear was the supposed lack of an airship until yesterday, when I realised there really is no need for one. Sure, you got on in X but at the end fo the day you didn't actually fly it around, instead you got pretty much what you did from XIII: basically a little checkpoint that lists possible locations and you beam there. Does it make it different? Yes. Do I miss the world map? Hell yes. Does it ruin the game? Not at all.

Just thought I'd point out that a 5/10 seems harsh when you read the review. The reviewer's complaint is certainly a major one, but it's not enough to take half of the score off. Especially since that one complaint may actually be good for some people.
I guess we just have to take it for what it is; an opinion.

It's probably worth mentioning that Egde don't actually like giving games a score. They feel it's an arbitrary method of measuring how good a game actually is seeing as any reader can more or less tell how good a game is by the information gleaned in the review and I'd have to agree with them. Throwing a score at a game is measuring it up to other games. This way of thinking is in gaming is archaic, you wouldn't judge a piece of art on how it measures up to another. Scoring it only makes rapid fanboys/girls foam at the mouth and spam us with their grievances.
That being said, 5!?!? I you crazy Edge!
I usually trust Edge's critique so this is rather worrying for me...

5/10 does seem harsh.
This actually came up at school today when a friend of mine (typical Halo/Cod lover) asked me if I was going to get FF13. I said yes and expressed my great excitement over it having only seen trailers and been on official sites.
He then told me that some show gave a review on it last night and gave it a low score because of it's linear gameplay. I told him that I didn't care about that and I usually get lost if their isn't some boundaries and sandbox games overwhelm me.
He then went on to say that I was too dumb for quality games and that he is right and that the storyline looks shit as well and that he would never buy it. I told him to keep his opinion with people who will agree because right now, I could punch you because you and your Cod shitheads think that you know exactly what is a good game and what is not. (bad recent experiences, I was losing my temper)
BUT ANYWAY! It is all about opinion. It may seem like I am forcing my opinion with the whole Cod shithead incident above but really, I was over him pushing his beliefs of what is good and bad as fact and that I don't care whether he likes it or not. I simply lost my temper.
I don't expect an amazing storyline from FF13 for some reason, I hear it is not as good as previous ones and so I expect not to cry like I did in 10 or scream with shock like I did in 7 but I am hoping for a good storyline and nothing too anti-climactic.
overall, it is all about opinion and mine is that 5/10 is harsh.
