I dont see how you can compare either. As you stated yourself they are both superb composers but both have their strong points and weak points musically. Not only that but they compose for totally different mediums. I'm too tired to go into musical details right now though...

They're pretty difficult to compare. Williams is far more musically knowledgable than Uematsu, so that gives him an edge. His compositions are very skillful and precise, using a broad spectrum of sounds, and he can be incredibly diverse.

However, Uematsu is completely self-taught, and (if I remember correctly) he doesn't even know how to write sheet music. That indicates a pretty amazing innate talent.

But in the end, I'd have to give the edge to Williams.

Okay, I located the interview I was referring to, and I may have only been half-right (hence my use of "if I remember correctly") about his ability to write sheet music (although in the interview he says he has difficulty reading sheet music. It would only stand to reason he has even less ability to write it, if any at all). It's from an old Official Playstation Monthly, circa pre-FFX release.

OPM: In the past, your scores have often come out on orchestral CD versions. Do you like to hear your music performed by an orchestra?

Uematsu: Orchestral versions are only one of many ways to interpret music. But because I have released many orchestral versions, people tend to mistake me for a classical composer. Truthfully speaking, I have never had proper education in music, can't play instruments well, and take a long time to read music.

Again, this is hardly a slam against Nobuo. My statement was a compliment to his innate ability.

Hmm, interesting. And here I thought I was done learning new stuff.
