Some of the 'ancient instrument' tracks on FFIX are especially lovely and haunting.
But I think for the quality of the final CD alone, I'd go for FFVIII. Just about anyway

Haunting...that's a good word for alot of the IX songs, like Burmecian Kingdom. Alot of them have a melancholy air to them as well, like Freya's theme...and then there's ones like Ipsen's Heritage...which i'm not entirely sure what feeling i get from it, but it's plain awesome.
Liberi Fatali is such a great song, i love it almost as much as i do One Winged Angel ^^
Ya know, i dont find alot of VII's music to be that memorable (although it certainly surpasses XII's soundtrack), but i have to say, i love the boss music.

VII had its high points and the boss theme is certainly one of them. I also liked the Shinra company, the turks, Aerith's theme, and one winged angel. My absolute favorite is probably Cid's theme though. It just fit him perfectly.

FFVII was a great soundtrack, but FFVIII was even better. I really can't stop listening to any song from FFVIII. I mean the beats totally kick butt. Like "Man with machine guns" that song is so 80's and that is why I love it so. And there are a lot of sounds that makes me cry too. Like for example "Eyes on Me" every word she sang made me cry so much.

Man with the Machine Gun is awesome, so is Maybe I'm a Lion. Eyes On Me never made me cry, but Melodies of Life from IX makes me cry.

FFX gets my vote.
FF7 and FF8 OSTs were really good but I love so many tracks from X. Uematsu has some gold hidden within the 4 disc set and I love playing some themes over and over again. Themes like "Wandering Flame" and "Someday The Dream Will End" are made of awesome. "Path of Repentance" is also one of the greatest piano themes I've ever listened to.

Haha, the alternate title is "Via Purifico". It's the theme when Yuna and company first try to escape from Bevelle from the long corridors. You probably recognize it now.

To me, IX is the best soundtrack, followed closely by FFVI. I love the variation on "A Wicked Melody" that begins the Kuja boss battle, but unfortunately it goes south from there. Overall, though, it's a nice, very self-referential soundtrack. FFVII's was probably the weakest ST entirely composed by Uematsu, IMO. "One-Winged Angel" saves it from being a total disaster, however, along with a handful of other highlights.

I think the best thing about the IX soundtrack is that not only is it wonderful in and of itself, but almost every song on there reminds me of the exact location or scene where it played in the game, and that in turn brings back whatever emotion i experienced during that part of the game. Other soundtracks dont do that for me, save for a few tunes.
