Olympic Games 2008
Didn't see a thread for this one. The olympic games got underway at Beijing, China recently. There's plenty of issues surrounding the games, such as the relationship between participating nations, the poor air quality in Beijing, and even the recent murder of a relative of the US volleyball coach by a chinese man wielding a knife. He stabbed two people before jumping two stories to his own death. What an uplifting start! But anywho, they do actually compete in sporting events there, soooo...
Any events/athletes that you'll be keeping your eye on? Predictions for the country that'll come out of the games with the most medals maybe? Or maybe you don't care about the Olympics. That's a distinct possibility.

I, for one, do not care about the olympics. It doesn't have any sports that I'd watch normally, with the exception of basketball. So just because in 1896 some frenchman decided to reinvent the olympics, I should want to watch it? No.
I feel a little bit of national pride when my country wins one of its very few gold medals, but that only lasts for a few seconds.
I just can't see the point in watching, or even really caring about the olympics.

I'm not a die-hard or veteran but I do enjoy watching the Olympics, if for nothing else but to amuse myself by trying to pronounce foreign names.
I can't say I know any of the athletes but I suppose I'll just support Britain for the sake of patriotism.
Hahahah, on a small side-note, my neighbour came through to my party last night and asked if I'd been watching "that beautiful chinese program"

I normally only ever watch the gymnastics, all those bendy people facinate me. I noticed we already had a boxer guy sent home because he was too fat to compete in the featherweight shizz & the most Ive heard on the olympics so far is all the kicking off that's been on the news with protestors and shit

The opening ceremony was well good...we've gone something like 6x over budget at least on the 2012 Olympics and I bet our opening ceremony will be shite.
Anyway, I don't really watch the Olympics live unless it's in the morning when I'm having my breakfast, I just go to BBC Sport and watch the highlights which sums up all the good parts; http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport/
At least we won the women's cycling road race, the cycling events are by far the hardest events in my opinion...take the men's road race for example, they were cycling for just over 6 straight hours.

I really like watching the Olympics; it brings out my patriotic side and my irrational hate for other countries. I do mostly focus on sailing as I am a sailor and luckily the UK is good at it (double w00t) and for some reason I’ve been focusing on the rowing as well even though I usually don’t like it.

I'm not patriotic in the least bit, but when it comes to sporting events, I like watching the United States win. The games don't really make me hate other countries, though...
Thoroughly enjoyed watching the US men's basketball team obliterate China.

I am proud to be British (and Scottish) but that is as far as my patriotism generally goes, also at no other time do I irrationally hate other countries just when it comes to sports. I think sports are bad for me in that sense but it doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy it. I don’t even understand my logic on this one, and I’ve given up trying.

I think I know what you mean. It's like my hatred of the Yankees and their players. I don't have any personal issues with them, but I "hate" them because of the times they've beaten up on the team I root for. I don't hate the players as people, but as sports figures, I do.
Yeaaah...sorta hard to explain, isn't it? Pretty twisted, too.
