Well that article is certainly offensive. Good lord, not all men are brutish apes. I'm not reduced to a caveman to win. And I'm generally motivated to "conquer" the game because, oh I dunno, IT'S FUN? Or because it has a good story? Or maybe because it's a good way to waste time? And I have no problem rolling over and giving up on a game when it keeps kicking my ass. Shitting hell, way to generalize. How many people did they even test? A bunch of frat boys grunting over their Madden games?

I'm sorry for taking this off-topic, but where's the proof that men are more successful than women? I'd certainly like to know what your sources are for this little bit of information. Do you sit back and count every single successful man compared to successful women in this world and that's how you know? I'm sorry, but you said here was uncalled for, rude, uncooth and sexist. It's very offensive to females (and myself), and keep in mind that there ARE other females here that would find something like that offensive. Sounds very Tedius-like if you ask me.

Anyway, please continue your discussion. I've said my bit.

Oh, sorry. I meant to say that, "It could be trying to imply that there are more succesful men than women due to their competitive nature(I'm glad that I'm a man- I don't need to deal with that kind of shit)"

I had no intentions of being sexist.

Is this even true? I mean, I just think that men get more into video games because they're brought into it more so than girls are, due to stereotypes. It's kinda like how people always give girls pink things and boys blue things. It's like a tradition, "what's manly and what's girly," and when it's followed by people from a young age I can certainly see how they can grow up into being more interested in games.

Pathetic attempt to save face is pathetic.

If you'd actually meant that, you would have said it before to avoid sounding sexist in the first place. Nice try.

Aye, that's true. Girls just aren't billed as gamers. Men have always been the main consumers for videogames, and I suppose it hasn't been fully accepted as a prime female interest. Even today it's not seen as something natural for a girl to do. Most female gamers one sees in the media (such as G4 or GameTrailers) don't seem like actual gamers, they're mostly just skanks being paid to drivel on about games. That's not to say that there aren't girl gamers, it just perpetuates the stereotype that girls aren't cut out to be gamers.

On a related matter, saying that men are more "obsessed" with videogames isn't very fair. Men have typically been the bigger consumer of videogames because there have simply been more games made to appeal to them rather than the female sex, or both sexes.

Ya know...it's kinda saying that men are more competitive than women too. I don't think being competitive and wanting to win something can be resigned to just the male sex. Hell, just look at womens' sports, they're just as aggressive as men.

Well, if you noticed that most gamer girls I've seen usually play Japanese RPGs, some adventure, and some platformers. (Final Fantasy, Zelda, Mario) Some girls play MMORPGs as well as long as it has 'pretty/cute' characters and settling. (WoW for example)

I only know two girls, including myself, that play Western RPGs such as Oblivion, Neverwinter Nights, and Warcraft 3 (DOTA). I also played a few FPS such as Bioshock, Half-Life 2, and Team Fortress 2. (Resident Evil series are third person shooters, not FPS.) I don't see many gamer girls stretch out into different genres.

Usually when it comes to Player VS Players combat I usually play a healer. I've noticed that most female gamers play healers in MMORPGs and games that are PVP. For me, it's because I rather step back and help my team mates out. I don't want to get into combat directly. This is where competitive men step in. Men always want to reach the top and wants to be the one with the most kills/points.

As for Western RPGs VS Eastern RPGs. When it comes to Western RPGs the atmosphere and the style is unattractive to female gamers. For example, in many western rpgs they have orcs, trolls, races that look unattractive that makes girls put the game down. Also Western RPGs are harder and it's tougher to survive. You depend on yourself, you follow your own path, there no one holding you hand guiding and you to the right path.

For Eastern RPGs, they're very attractive and are very cute. Girls are more attracted to Eastern RPGs because of the attractive style. (Pretty main girls and hot male main character.) Also they're much easier to play and your guided through. The computer is holding your hand throughout the way and the game usually tells you where to go next.

I personally agree with Light. I feel like a lot of video games are marketed towards males. Additionally, I think some socially reinforced gender roles come into play. As I was raised, I really wasn't encouraged to play video games. My parents bought me teddy bears and Barbie. I remember when Nintento 64 came out I asked my parents for one, but they refused to buy it for me for whatever reason. I think it's really changing now, but back when I was a kid, I think video games were mainly marketed towards males. That's probably why more males (especially my age) are into video games. I do not think it's because competitiveness, or whatever, appeals more to men. I'm female, but I'm HIGHLY competetive. And suggest that there are more successful men than women in the world again, and I'll rip you a new one, pal. Kthx

I like a small, skippable tutorial, just enough to help with getting the hang of the controls, or early ingame tips. I normally read the manual beforehand.
It does help when you know what's going on, as well. I'm mainly not too fond of Western RPGs because of their storylines and designs, myself. Take Oblivion for example. Storyline is all in first person, no nice cutscenes or storyline style. I like the trekking and all that, but it becomes boring, even with the auto-transportation. It's just endless, with no solid storyline, and the outcome is always the same. I don't like a load of mediocre quests to find X item, or slay X monster in X cave. Fair enough, the main storyline is fun, but not integrated or compelling enough. Not true for all western RPGs, I know, but still.
I suppose I prefer a tactical, rather than hack and slash challenge, as well. Whereas in Final Fantasy you control a party of mainly specialised characters, in Oblivion you just control one super character with no personality(due to the high degree of class and race customisation) who is expected to do everything on his or her own. Not very fun. Maybe it's a bit different in MMORPGs such as WoW, where you have clans, but then that is really time consuming, and of course, there is absolutely no real storyline or sense of completion, because the game just goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on... you get the idea.

Guys are lazier maybe? At least I am. Sitting down in front of the television with a controller is always a good time.

That's how I'd respond to that article...though I don't handle losing very well at all. I go "apeshit" if I keep getting beat by the same person over and over. I hate admitting that someone might be a hell of a lot better than me at a videogame I consider myself good at...even if they are.

I'm a good sport later on, but in the heat of the match as I'm getting raped, I take it hard when I don't conquer. lolz
