I think you're looking into this way too deeply here. The PlayStation sold shit loads since it appealed to a new generation of gamers by marketing the console as cool which gaming wasn't really looked at beforehand, the Wii is marketed at family's and generally those who never had a console and it's working but it's not hurting the game industry at all. Gaming is bigger than ever and last year was probably the best in recent years if not ever so is it really that big an issue?
The Xbox and the PS3 (and PC as well I suppose) still caters more for the "hardcore" gamer with the MGSs, GTAs, FFs and newer IPs like Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect and Bioshock so there's plenty of room and money to make for both types of games and that's not going to change anytime in the near future.
The way that people use the term casual gaming as a negative thing is kinda retarded as well, I know what I like so why the hell should I worry if someone prefers Peggle over MGS4?

Ugh, everybody tries to do sandboxes these days because people complain when games are too linear. So of course developers try to appease people who got greedy from GTA and when they don't do well enough, people complain again.
Honestly I find sandboxes annoying. Wow, how wonderful, you have a massive city to run around and wreak havoc in. Enjoy spending a large portion of your time getting from Point A to Point B instead of just killing things.

Too hard? That's what difficulty settings are for. Maybe they need to be made more reflective of skill.
I HATE it when games are made shorter, too. They cost more than films. I'll be damned if I'm paying £40 for less than 15 hours of gameplay and storyline in total.
That's another thing that annoys me, the difficulty settings, and I think it has more to do with developers than casualfags. For as long as I can remember, all "hard mode" has consisted of is more enemies with bigger amounts of health. Every so often a game will have enemies with more health that ALSO have better AI. Too often increased difficulty manifests itself as nothing more than spending twice as long chopping things up before you move onto the next screen.
As for games getting shorter, yeah, it seems to be a trend. Good example: Metal Gear Solid 4. I've heard many accounts of it being beaten in 6 to 8 hours, Plus Kojima made it more "accessible" to new fans (which is retarded since you'd have to have played the old ones to make sense of it), so now stealth doesn't play a big role. If you want to run and gun, by all means, do so, you won't die, especially with that regenerating health of yours. I certainly wouldn't be happy if I'd just spent $500 on a game that only lasted me 8 hours and was easy as piss.

You do raise good points. It's really not affecting me if someone wants to play Boom Blox a couple hours a week (although I do still think Nintendo is leaving its long-time fans as an afterthought in favor of raking in more cash with gimmicks). I suppose what I find most annoying is that there's so much talk of "OMG THEY'RE NOT APPEALING TO CASUAL GAMERS THEY WON'T MAKE ENUFF MONIES" or when you run into some idiot in a game store who thinks they fucking LOVE Final Fantasy when all they've ever played/seen of it is Crisis Core or Advent Children. And then you get these idiots who don't know a damn thing about gaming. Like I was watching some of the gameplay vids of Diablo 3 on GT the other day (OMG, DO WANT) and this one idiot posts a comment and he's like "wtf is diablo it looks like shit" and I was aghast.
I guess that's really what annoys me the most, that casual gaming is drawing in a bunch of ignorant morons who act like they know everything about gaming when the most challenging thing they've ever played is Pokemon Diamond.

The level of elitism showed here is not only fucking retarded it's pathetic.
OH NOES SOMEONE DOESN'T LIKE DIABLO AND HAS NEVER HEARD OF IT THEREFORE IS AN UN-EDUCATED OAF WHO DOES NOT DESERVE TO PLAY VIDEO GAMES, AND I AM THE TRUE MASTER OF VIDEO GAMES
To be perfectly honest, I've rarely heard about Diablo myself, from what I've seen it's a point and click RPG sort of thing, amirite? Doesn't really appeal to me either, DOS DAT MAK ME CASUALFAG
It appears you're less concerned about "casualfags ruining gaming" and more concerned about people having different tastes to yours.
So what if the hardest game someone has played is Pokemon Diamond. Everyone starts somewhere in gaming, you can't expect people to start playing Sonic the fucking Hedgehog on Megadrive when they have the XBOX360 with it availible on there.
Likewise you can't expect people to want to play FFVII, when there are more shiny games available. FFVII looks dated, and people will not want to play a dated video game if they aren't as hXc as you are. Learn to accept some people will not want to play the same games as you, and tastes vary.
tl;dr Stop being an elitist cock, and I stress again, GB2 /v/ if you're going to carry on being a pompous arse about video games, it is far more appreciated over there.

Let's all calm down with the insults and posting tone please (Finnegan, Pooley and VR). I really don't want to have to issue an infraction. If I continue to see this thread be used as your personal flaming grounds because you have difference of opinion, I will close it up and archive it. You have all been warned.

Casual gamers are ones who play simplified games because they don't take gaming seriously, it's a form of entertainment not one of the most important things in life. It's up to them if they want to experience everything within gaming but they don't have to in the end. Casual gaming has existed since before the Wii.
That kid in the video however is just a wee prick with the belief that his opinion matters to anyone. He's nothing more than a glorified troll.

Already had a PM from Tielknight calling me a very nasty man :( won't happen again.
Although I do feel this isn't the sort of opinion we want to be sending out to new members. If I was new here, and was a casual gamer I'd have likely to have been offended and not considered coming back here.
I know I could've put that in slightly better terms to begin with, but I raged, and lost the game, and had no sammiches.

You can see the predicament I'm in here.
Ah okay, well good and thank you for not making it difficult on us. It's appreciated.
Yeah, you definitely could have. Maybe you could try it next time ;P and if I'm here, I'll make sure you at least have some sammiches. Bad predicament is bad.

For example, if any of you have been watching the Bonus Round on GameTrailers, you'll know that they're talking about stuff coming up for E3 and speculating on things. Well, half of what they've been saying amounts to "HURR I THINK SONY IS FINALLY BRANCHIN OUT TO CASUALS" like the PS3 is trying to be the Wii and "XBAWCKS ISNT TRYING HARD ENUFF TO BRANCH OUT THEY ONLY APPEAL TO HARDCORE" like appealing to the hardcore is a bad thing.
Now, I'm no business expert, but to me it seems stupid to try to appeal to casuals. Sure, things might sell great for a year or two, but casuals aren't going to be a steady consumer base like your hardcore gamers. The Wii is the perfect example. It's selling like hotcakes, but who's making it sell and what? Soccer moms and nursing homes. WiiSports. WiiFit. And look at the amount of good first-party games on the console, there's not many. Good third-party games are even fewer. It's almost as if they're turning their backs on hardcore gamers in favor of appealing to non-gamers just to make more money, but they don't realize it's going to backfire on them. Hardcore gamers are going to stray from the Wii because there's not enough games for them on the system, and eventually the casuals will get bored and move onto something else. I mean, just look at Mario Kart. The DS game is fantastic. But what about the Wii version? Yeah, it's still a pretty solid game, but they've made it even more casual than it used to be. Powersliding? Gone. The need to memorize tracks or just plain practice at a course? Gone.
Take a look around you, what kind of crap is popular these days? Guitar Hero and other rhythm games. The Wii is selling because of peripherals and games that aren't really games. And what's the most talked-about exclusive game for the PS3 now that MGS4 has passed? LittleBigPlanet, another casual title. Plus, with the advent of casualfags, we now have whiny little cunts who declare a game crap when it's too hard for them. This kid is a perfect example:
Now I'm certainly no good at Contra. As a matter of fact, I'm not very good at hard games at all. But I don't cry and declare a game crap when I can't beat it, I try harder (and if I can't beat it, I sell it). Casualfags are going to destroy gaming. It's just like anything else, the more mainstream and popular it becomes, the more corrupted it becomes by people who really have no business dealing with it.
Thoughts?
I'm gonna use WoW, as an example. Only about 5% of WoW's players are hardcore players, the problem with appealing to the hardcore players is that they usually demand very extreme stuff.
For example, Hardcore PvPers wanted the Arena Gear to be harder to get, and Raiders want dungouns to be harder. The problem with this is that then Casuals will fall behind, and then won't want to play, I'd know because it happened to me. And for the new people just starting out, they'll just quit once they reach lvl 70, because it will be way too hard for them to compete with all the other people. Although what I'm saying mostly applies to WoW, and may not apply to other games ^^.
If you cave in to the minority you lose the majority, while I understand what you mean, its not the best bussiness decision. Casuals are casuals, just like a game is a game,When a game takes over your life...then you have a problem. Now I'm not saying playing games is bad, but when you find the game too easy, and dedicate too much time to it...then you probably need a break lol.
Feel free to reply VR
On a side note, that kid isnt a good example of what a casual is. That dude has said many classic games like Mortal Kombat suck for the most dumb reasons, he doesn't exactly fit into the casual position.
