And um, PS2 aren't really that costly anymore these days, so you can try investing on that especially if your main purpose is to play PS2 games. However, if you also want to play PS3 games (and PS2 games as well) then buy an 80 gig system.
Or you can do what I originally intended to do (up until I found out about the 80 gig limited edition which includes MGS4)...I bought a PS2 a few months ago for only 130 bucks, then I had planned to invest on a PS3 in a year or so. But like I said, I might get a PS3 soon though.

If you don't really have any interest on any game of the PS3; get a PS2, the price is really low these days =P And some companies still does ports of the new games for the PS2.
However, if you finish buying a PS3 look first but the old 60Gbs. It's the best for play PS2 games by hardware. But if you are unlucky and didn't find it; get the 80Gb model; is the second best of all in terms of compatibility with the old games =P

Given that PS3's ability to play PS2 games isn't all that superb, invest in a PS2. though this depends on what games you are willing to play. ALL PS3 models play all the PS1 games (80 / 60 gb models play PS2 games like the posts above), and you get updates to improve the stability of those games quite regularly.
The PS3 is more or less a FUTURE investment. where as you might get a lot more out of buying a PS2, considering it's library of games is vast and cheap, and it has BETTER combatability with PS1 games, though not dampening PS3's ability to play PS1 which is as good.
i only have the 40gb model PS3 as i was really wanting to play Burnout, Devil May Cry 4, and in particular, future Metal Gear and Final Fantasy instalments. my PS2 is still intact.
about the PS2, i'd give a pre-owned PS2 a VER good clean out. many owners don't bother cleaning out the vents and the machines fail after 4-5 years without due care. mine's lasted into its 8th year now because i kept it clean and clear of dust, just simply stick a vacuum against the vents.
Also, if you're getting a PS2, look for the OLD models, they work better than the slimline models that allegedly overheat because they are so small.

If my PS2 packed in I would get anther one. Without a doubt. The whole lack of backwards compatability really puts me off getting a PS3. Plus there are a total of NO games I want for the PS3 right now
Stupid thing is, as soon as my PS1 packed in, first thing I did was get a PS2..... you really thing those idiots at Sony would reaslise that's probably what a lot of pwople did
Right now my PS2 is WAY more precious. I'd recommend just getting one of those instead. Plus, they are pretty darn cheap thsese days

Seems weird how (in my experience) that there was no issues with playing Ps1 games on a PS2. Whereas now with a better console it can't handle it. I also wondered if you could buy PS1 games on the PS3 online, like you can buy snes games on the wii.
PS3's are probably too expensive, and maybe in time, when the price drops, they might sort out some of the compatability issues?

Only the 60g model of PS3 has complete backwards compatability with PS1 and PS2 games because it has the PS2 engine already built in. The 80g model is compatable with only about 80% of old games and runs them not very well because it uses an emulator rather than the engine. Plus the 60g can do everything the 80g can, just has a little less memory. Unfortunatly the 60g has now been discontinued (why on earth I do not know) and the only place you can get one is probably going to be eBay and the like, for close if not higher than £400.
If you are only really intrested in playing PS2 games right now, I'd recommend getting a cheap PS2 and then get a PS3 in the future when it is more appealing. Keep your PS2 for the games as it'll be better than playing them on whatever rubbish PS3 model you may pick-up.

Yes you can, at around £3.50 each, but the library is not as extensive as the Wii's collection. They also work on the PSP also.

I don't own a ps3, I don't plan to for a long time, mainly due to game selections.
It really depends if you like the games they currently have. PS3 will soon be throwing much more games out into the stores soon, it's your choice if you want to wait. Mgs4 + ps3 package might be a nice deal for you at the moment if you decided to invest in a ps3. Keep in mind, I may not own a ps3, but many of my friends tell me that they had to upgrade their televisions to HD in order to play the ps3.

Well, after all, the PS3 will be able to play really high quality graphics. So a Low Definition tv may not be able to show the graphics as clearly as a HD tv would
