DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi
Yeah, I'm in a DBZ mood
Has anyone played any of the games in the Budokai Tenkaichi series? I've got the first one, and while I love the 3d roaming system that wasn't in the Budokai series, I'm dissapointed that the battle system relies so heavily on Ki based attacks and that the damage is so..random =/
Is it the same for Budokai Tenkaichi 2/3?
I love the amount of story there is to play through, while the others just had the Saiyan, Freeza, Cell and Buu sagas, this one has loads of them to play through - like Cooler, Super 17 etc, and the amount of playable characters is amazing

I played Budokai before, but I'm not sure which exact one it was. All I know was that it kinda looked like one of those cell-type...not 3D. Still good though, but the control was a bit difficult to manage.
Not to mention flying while trying to battle. What a pain.

Ah, but that, my friends, is because you have not played Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 or 3. Those games were a godsend!
As Mark so rightfully said, "It's orgasmic!" (Actually...I have to quote that, Mark xD SIG-QUOTE! WOOT!)
See, Tenkaichi 1 sucked balls. It relies so heavily on Ki-based attacks, or rather Blast 2 attacks (such as Kamehameha, High Speed Rush, etc.), and melee fighting does very little damage.
Tenkaichi 2 was a BIG step up. Not only did melee do damage *gasp*, but you could also do wicked combos. You could do air combos, you could stun them (way better than in Tenkaichi 1) and you could do lots of other stuff. Not only that, but you could charge certain attacks, such as Kamehameha and Masenko. It also introduced the excellent tag-team/Multi-Fighter Match.
Now, Tenkaichi 3! OMG! I LOVED this game. Each character has their own set of combos, and the ones that are essentially the same set look totally different. You can warp way better than before, you can counter-warp (in other words, you don't have to use Blast 1 to dodge cheap attacks and retaliate), and melee becomes a key aspect of winning every fight. You can't successfully sit on your ass and use Barrage attacks to win. Nope. Now you have to WORK.
Not only that, but whereas BT1 and 2 had crappy hard-modes, BT3 is uber hard. If I were to fight Frieza, Cell, Buu, Bebi, and Omega Shenlong in BT2 on hard mode, I would crush them. In BT3, I'm lucky to last until Bebi. Hell, I'm lucky to last until Buu!
Seriously, Tenkaichi 1 did not do the series ANY justice. If you base your opinions purely on that game, you are missing out on a HUGE opportunity.

Blech...these games are mediocre at best. That's coming from a die-hard Dragonball Z fan, by the way.
The combat system is well-done, but I have difficulty getting by the horrifying story mode. In the first two Budokai Tenkaichi games in particular, the story is a fragmented mess that has the player defeating foes such as Frieza and Cell with players like Krillin and Hercule Satan. Even if you WIN the fight, you'll watch a video sequence showing your character all bloody and beaten while the enemy you just defeated celebrates his/her victory. What's with that? The dialogue is painful, but at least the voice-acting is good.
Once you endure enough pain and obtain all the unlockable content, the game becomes worth playing. Like I said earlier, the combat is well-done. The battles are particularly enjoyable in Budokai Tenkaichi III. It isn't too much different from Budokai Tenkaichi II, but there are enough improvements to make it noticeably better.

As I was saying to Mark last night, I didn't even realise that there was a third Tenkaichi but I'm in love with the first two.
I really felt that the Tenkaichi games strongly conveyed the struggle that the characters were going through in the fights. Difficulty permitting, you could really get into the fights when you had a hard time - think about it, did Goku manage to beat Frieza with a Kamehameha every now and then, or did he struggle for christknowshowlong? And when you fight him in the game, you can't necessarily just beat Frieza with a Kamehameha - he can teleport away and then come rushing at you when you're still charging it up, smacking you all over Namek.
Don't even get me started on the Rush attacks. Just remember what happens when both of you rush together and end up colliding - you have to spin the analog controller so fast in order to win. It might just be me but I find myself letting out the same moans and groans when I'm doing that, I just get so lost in the fights.
While I'm here - in the matches where you have more than one character, how the hell do you switch between them? It's so annoying to see five Cell Juniors popping in and out when the feel like it but when I want to change from Krillin to Vegeta, I don't know how. No button seems to do it. xD
The only thing I hate is how the opponent can also pick up the Dragonballs, after you've worked so hard to pagger him into every mountain in the area, he nabs the bloody ball that was right infront of you. It's not like they can wish or anything, they're just being gimps. Though, I suppose, it adds to the realism, eh?
Tenkaichi > you, tbph.

If you're playing the PS2 Version, you hold down L2 and push L3 and R3 at the same time. In other words, hold down L2 and push down on both the analog sticks (as though they were buttons), like you do to transform with the right Analog.
Actually, in BT3, whenever you score a victory in story mode, it plays a specific sequence based on who you won/lost with. For example, if you fight Frieza with Picollo in the story mode on BT3, during the fight where you do very little damage to Frieza with Goku and Picollo, it comes up with a sequence where Picollo is happy that he saved his home planet.
The battles in BT3 are amazing. The story mode was dissapointing, it highlights some of the stupidest fights (some of which aren't even that famous). Hell, it doesn't even cover the fight with Ginyu. However, the Ultimate Battle section really makes up for it, especially the survival mode. I loved killing the All-Stars with GT Goku
To repeat myself repeating Mark; It's orgasmic
I swear, Mark, that's gonna be my new catch phrase heehee

I like how Master Roshi beat Broly...lol.
I'm really good with Super 17, Pan and Teen Gohan.
I totally suck with King Piccolo whish is lame 'cause he's my favorite antagonist in DB....
I wish there was more movement in Story Mode as opposed to just fragmented battle after battle.
