#FFF on IRC
Ahh, the wonders of IRC. IRC? What's that you say? Internet Relay Chat is one of the oldest forms of chat and most addicting on the net. If you already know about it, then don't let me stop you!
Server: irc.lunarnet.org
Channel: #FFF
Channel is being run by server operator RealityFantasy. Feel free to use it 24/7.
IRC is an excellent way of opening new doors in large communitys such as FFF. mIRC is perhaps one of the most popular IRC clients available. For those that don't know anything about it... I'll help you out.
Download mIRC and install it. Open the program and the Options window by File > Options... There you can configure your server list (irc.lunarnet.org) and your personal information such as your nickname for chat. When your finished, click "Connect to IRC Server" and wait for the server to log you in. From there, to access the channel you type in...
/join #FFF
... and you're there! That simple. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
There is also a Java version of the FFF Chatroom (Provided by Lucian Flamestrike of SimRTK)
Quote:
-Launch your internet browser
-type in the url irc.flamestrikesforge.uni.cc
-Let the java applet load and if any boxes concerning security come up just click run or accept.
-when its loaded use /nick <username> to change your name
-use /join #FFF to join the appropriate channel. The applet automatically connects to irc.lunarnet.org.
-once in the channel enjoy chatting with your FFF or other forum buddies!
Note: simirc may not work on certain university firewalls.
You will need to change the server to lunarnet.org to be able to access the chat using this.
Post here if you have any questions regarding how to download or operate mIRC. This is just a trial run, to see if people use it and like it. ^ _ ^

Although it sounds like a good idea, and could be used by members who don't know about / don't like the shoutbox, there's a simple flaw in it. Trolls, how are you meant to block them? Members would be able to flame each other and staff members and we wouldn't be able to stop them with a silence or ban command...
So, while it sounds good, I think I'll stick to the shoutbox Unless it becomes really popular

On top of that, it was just horrible to use in the first place. There were porn chatrooms [which might appeal to others, I suppose] all over the place and
If we're going to change anything, bring back back the chatrooms.

I hated the IRC chatrooms. I'll just stick to the shoutbox. There's more casual conversation that goes on in there than big groups of people chatting. Aerith also makes a good point as well, especially with the members flaming, not be able to silence the trolls, etc...better to just stick with the shoutbox.

For your first question, it's simple. Chatroom mods can ban/kick people, or simply mute (or as you put, 'silence') them and allow them to stay in the channel. I would give all administrators/moderators moderation powers in #FFF, allowing them to prevent trollers and other troublemakers from reigning supreme. Easy as that.

I've been using Lunarnet for four years, and there aren't any porn chatrooms on the server I use. I have checked.
