Super Mario Bros. Deluxe help

I need help with super mario bros deluxe, I am on World 1-4, and when i get to the end of the level, a fire breathing monster appears blowing fire at me, then i die. What am I supposed to do? There is a little floating bar at the top that i can stand on, but i can't get up on it? what do i have to do????

You need to either hit the axe on the right hand side of the bridge by running underneath or jumping over him, another way is to kill him by shooting him with a Fire Flower.
