You can't catch Mankey before facing Brock to my knowledge. When I started with Charmander I'd just raise up a Butterfree so it had Confusion.

I still play the games and I still rate them as some of my favourite games ever though I still have to finish FireRed and Diamond but I've lost my DS which is a bitch.

If you detour onto the route west from Veridian (sp?) City (where you can face an optional battle with your Rival) you can catch one in the grass there.

Butterfree with confusion is also a good option.

Are you sure? I could have sworn that Mankey first appears in the route that's north of Vermillion in the Red version. I don't believe Mankey is obtainable in the Blue version. Mankey is substituted for Meowth in that one.

And I don't worry too much about having a type advantage against Brock. Even with Charmander and Weedle, I usually win by poisoning/burning his pokemon. His Onix is a pushover because he mainly uses Bide.

Mankey is only available for catching on Yellow version [in Veridian]. It was one of the inclusions they bragged about after hearing so many complaints about lacking 'good' Pokémon before the confrontation with Brock.

I never had the Yellow version so would never have known that, was wondering how I would have missed that in the first place.

As said before Brock's not too difficult anyway, even Charmander along with a healthy amount of potions could take on his things no problem.

I was wondering that myself. I figured that would be the reason, though. I take some pride in knowing a lot about the pokemon games I've played. Yellow ain't one of 'em.

I usually choose Bulbasaur as a starter. Once I clear Brock, I deposit my starter for the remainder of the game. Starters and legendaries are crutches, in my opinion.

Its been so long since I played the original Red and Blue. I know you can definitely catch one in the Yellow and the remakes though. Ah well.

IMO the starters are some of the best of their type, the legendaries however are indeed wank.

I'm pretty sure you can catch mankeys by detouring to the west of Viridian as Moonie stated. That, or every pokeman game I've played r haxx'd.

Though, I never quite bothered my arse with him, though. I just got me a Nidoran male and trained it until it learned double kick. Not a bad addition for long term play, really.

The new pokemans in D/P look really shit. D :

On top of that, I've recently become angry towards Brady games because they pulled a real cock-up on their Diamond/Pearl guide. Honestly, it didn't even say SHIT about the new pokemans like Rhyperior, Electrive, or even some of the Sinnoh legendaries bar Palika, Dialga, and the mini coneheads.

Ugh. It makes me regret selling all my pokemon shit. Bunch of bastards. >: (

Maybe you can. I know Mankey appears there on Fire Red, but I could have sworn it didn't on the original games. Either way, I've never seen one there. I've been getting jipped out of a fighting pokemon in the early stages of the game. >:(

That's the only pokemon I pick up there. You can get yourself a Nidoking nice n' early once you get yourself a moon stone...which isn't far off at that point.

On Yellow though you have to start off with a stupid Pikachu, which has no effect on any of Brock's rock pokemon so catching a Mankey would make sense on that version.

I think I need to get meself a DS so that I can play Diamond or Pearl, although judging by the way my brother talks about them they're just declining. Although I think there is a higher appearance of the original red/blue pokemon but I'm not sure. >< Would certainly be a good thing though, the pokemon upto silver were the best. They seemed to be running out of ideas by the time they got to Ruby, and the ones in D/P just look like spaced out robots. D:
