You mustn't have been that bad a player if you got 126 stars out of a possible 120.

I should say that the only slightly sucky thing about the game was the almost complete lack of award for completing it 100%.

That's true. I never felt compelled to obtain more than 70 stars. There isn't much incentive to do so...

I got all 120 just to experience the entire game, but I never went for 100% completion during replays.

I think I got to 116... I missed some secret stars.

Anyway, that game is so legendary that it inevitably draws comparisons, even today. When Sunshine came out, I thought, "That was fun, but some of the missions were too repetitive. Now, Mario 64 was better because...." When Galaxy came out, I thought, "That was fun, but some of the missions were too short. Now, Mario 64 was better because..." I think it suffers from FF7 syndrome. I'm always going to think FF7 is the best because it's the first FF game I played. I'm probably always going to think Super Mario 64 is better because it's the first 3D Mario platformer.

Mario 64 was the first N64 game I ever played. It was fun when I first played it, then I found the later levels hard, and stopped playing it for awhile. I went back to playing it recently, and it's not so bad--my only complaint is the camera angles, in which I think Zelda 64 does a better job of because of the Z-targeting.

But I'm not exactly a classic Mario fan or anything, most likely because the linearity of its predecessors was too simple and uninteresting for my own tastes--the fact that you can go through the same levels for different stars and in different places makes it more interesting and innovative. I like it when a game makes you think more.

Although certain levels take forever.

I remember one of my friends in grade school played this game, and when he was in Jolly Roger's Bay, he said the eel freaked him out so much that he screamed.

Well I shall expose my overall opinion of the game:

Graphics: 9.5
Mainly because they were simply great for the time and console for which it was made.

Playability: 9.4
The game is easy to use, though there are times in which controlling the landing spot after making a huge jump can be a pain. Still, the game compensates much of the slight loss in controls with more features, elements, side quests, etc.

Fun Factor: 10
Simply funny, how can someone not laugh after burning your a$$ (well Mario's a$$) and running like a madman and trying not to fall of the edge?

Difficulty: 9.3 Though it is not necessary to get every star, just an specific amount to reach the Final Boss, beating all side quests to get every single star can be tiresome, but challenging.

Replay Value: High
Come on, who wouldn't like to play this game again after a few months of beating it?

Overall Rating: 10
The game has almost every element that a good game should have. It has a high replay value, great graphics for the time in which it was created, good and fun to beat side quests and it includes one of the most famous characters of all times: Mario. It is even better than future released games, and can be compared with other Mario Games to measure their quality.

Mario 64 is quite easily the best game I've played on any Nintendo console, and is definitely up there with the best game I've ever played. Its generally because its just fun, its a game that you can play (even today) and the graphics etc, mean absolutely nothing.
IF Mario Galaxy is supposed to better than Mario 64 I think I better play it

From what I can tell, Super Mario Galaxy has more stages, but you don't spend as much time in each stage. I would have preferred the stages to be a little bigger and to have more stars in each stage, a la Mario 64. Still the fact that they added more controls and made so many stages in the first place gives it major points.

I adored Mario 64. until my cousin (4y.o. at the time) somehow deleted my profile. I had a lot of stars. But it was a great game. A classic
