Its pretty straight forward. You will get everything in the game. After beating Kingdom Hearts go play KH2.

There are several sidequests. For instance, after you finish dealing with a certain world, you may wanna go back to Traverse Town for there are some items that might appear, or shops that might open. Also, go explore the previous worlds you've been on to get some treasures.
But yeah, if you don't wanna deal with the sidequests, then it's pretty much straightforward. Really depends on how you play.

Ummm...I'm not really sure you can compare it to FFIV, or FFVII, but it is pretty good. Play it, love it, etc. Then pick up KHII and play that afterwards to get a great ending to the story!

The 101 Dalmations side quest is great. Cute little buggers. Have fun, it's a great game.

Kingdom Hearts is generally straight-forward. You'll be pointed in the right direction throughout the entire game by various sources.
There are some side-quests such as collecting materials necessary for synthesizing weaponry/equipment, locating trinity marks/dalmations, competing in tournaments, etc..., but they don't play a large role.
