BlitzBall..need I say more?
Alright, I'm sure people complain about this alot, but it's my turn lol. I really can't get the hang of this. I try recruting members, but their contracts kick in right before I reach them. Wakka is still in my party and hasn't retired yet. I'm still playing with the defult crappy team, and the only decent one is Tidus and...er...Grabba? Or whatever his name is (the goalie). Can anybody help me out? And, is this required for the game (are alot of the secrets only available if you play Blitzball)?

I can help some what.
Wait until later on in the game to play blitzball. Maybe when you get the airship back or what ever. So you can get Brother, he's good. Early player I usually got was an al bhed called Ropp.

Recruit Brother...He's one of the best members around.
Blitzball isn't really required to beat the game. Blitzball is more for getting extra items and getting Wakka's second item for his final weapon...(From What I remembered.)

For me I tried to equally level up all my characters so that I would have an evenly strong team, but in the end only Tidus and Brother were gaining monstrous amounts of EXP in the Blitzball games. I think that if you get the ball to them and have them do most of your scoring, they will affect your other teammates positively and you should win in no time.

It's also where you get all of Wakka's Overdrive Modes

Ok, the first thing to is recruit Jumal, I think that is his name. He is in Luca, you can get him right after the Blitzball story event. He is a decent goaltender to fill in until you can get one of the better goalies and will help you win some games early on. Letty makes a decent center for a while.
Someone mentioned above about getting brother. Well that is a definite. However, if you are a blitzball addict like me, you can't wait that long to play blitzball again. You can't get brother until you have the airship.
A tip for getting people you want. It's not a sure fire method and it takes patience. Wait until you see someone's contract expire after a game, if they don't resign with a team, stop playing Blitzball until you can recruit that character in game. I always keep an eye out for the Al Bheds goalie, Nimrook. My personal favorite.
Another tip. Even with the original Besaid team, you can still do decently. You can build your character levels up by just passing the ball around for a number of games. Take your goalie out of net occasionally as well and have him play a position so he can earn some levels this way as well. If your team has some decent stats, you can earn better experience by engaging the other team and surviving tackles or passing the ball successfully through them trying to block. *edit*This works to your benefit in two ways: your team levels up, and the opposing team gets little to no experience because you are hogging the ball.
Other than that, have fun and experiment. Recruit people you like, and build them up.
*another edit* Not sure how much detail to go into, but one more tip. If you can learn techs like nap shot, or wither shot, it will help you against tough goalies. Even if you don't score, you can greatly increase your chance to score on the next shot by putting them to sleep or lowering their catch skill.

I always used the original team, mainly because I was too lazy to go recruiting and thh way I did it was just keep passing the ball between my players to gain exp that way.....
In the second half I'd just keep passing and mooch down the side trying to avoid people then score with Jecht shot. Really dull and boring way of doing it but once I'd gotten a little exp that way you can then start tackiling and whatnot and learning different passes etc
I really didn't care Blitzball all that much so my of doing it is porolly the naffest way, but it worked for me!
*edit* I did't even KNOW you could recruit Brother lol
