Best time to start?
Hey, I don't know if I'm exactly asking this question in the right place or anything, but oh well.
I want to know, in your opinion, what would be the best time for a complete newbie to the FF series (with the exception of Kingdom Hearts 1&2 if you count them) to jump in and get into FF? If it helps any, I do want to find out a bit of the story, I don't want to play just for gameplay.

Well its up to you really. I say read reviews and get as much info as possible before you play any. Most people will throw you in the direction of 7, which isnt a bad start for a newbie. My first was 8 and I enjoyed it.

Start with FFI. I find if you play games that have better graphics you do not appreciate the old titles as much. Starting with FFI you wont have this problem.

If you haven't played an FF game yet then I think what Sephirothalpha mentioned is a good idea. A lot of people who start playing the latter games in the 3D era, they don't seem to appreciate the older titles. The later the title the worse it gets as you get some FFX fans who won't play an FF game before FFX because of the graphics. If you were to play them all in chronological order then I think it would be easier for you to judge what you really think is better rather than opting for the game with the uber graphics.

I doubt he has the time to play all those games in order. lol.
I would say start with FF7. It's a game that really everyone loves one way or another.

Cheers for the quick replies, I think I may go with FF7, graphics have never really changed my opinion on a game, and playing from FF1 to FF12 isn't exactly appealing.

My brother-in-laws little brother recently got convinced by me to get into the FF series, and I am starting out with FFX. It's graphically advanced enough to keep his attention and interest, until he realizes that there is more to an FF game than it's graphics and physical beauty. Hopefully once he gets really into the plot, beats the game, and realizes he likes it, I can let him borrow some of the older ones then so he can work his way through the series.

i played 9 first and it confused the hell out of me, i would say 8 or 10 are good for newbies as i found them easy to understand as a beginner to ff
