Need Some Help Thinning Out The Ranks (Pokémon Yellow)

There are a few Types that I can't decide which Pokémon to continue with...They're all at least Lvl 40 and I have all the gym badges now...

Fire - This one's probably one of the hardest because I like all of them and they all kick ass for different reasons...and Ninetales was an absolute BITCH to level w/that Move Set btw...V_V

Charizard - Lvl 40 - Slash, Ember, Rage, Leer

Ninetales - Lvl 42 - Flamethrower, Quick Attack, Fire Spin, Confuse Ray

Flareon - Lvl 41 - Bite, Quick Attack, Fire Spin, Sand-Attack

Water - Similar problem as w/Fire, really...I think Gyarados is the one Pokémon I always get in every gen though...but mostly just because you can always get a Magikarp early on in each one...

Blastoise - Lvl 40 - Skull Bash, Surf, Bite, Bubble

Gyarados - Lvl 41 - Hydro Pump, Bite, Water Gun, Dragon Rage

Kingler - Lvl 42 - Crabhammer, Stomp, Bubble, Leer

Fighting - I don't know which to choose here...They're both good.

Primeape - Lvl 40 - Karate Chop, Seismic Toss, Fury Swipes, Focus Energy

Hitmonlee - Lvl 43 - Jump Kick, Rolling Kick, Double Kick, Focus Energy

Poison - Or maybe Nidoqueen should be in competition with my Marowak for my Ground type?? *argh*

Muk - Lvl 40 - Sludge, Pound, Disable, Minimize

Nidoqueen - Lvl 40 - Body Slam, Double Kick, Scratch, Poison Sting

Bug - This one is probably the hardest and will require looking at the overall team in the end since the choices are like polar opposites...

Butterfree - Lvl 40 - Psybeam, Gust, Poisonpowder, Sleep Powder

Pinsir - Lvl 40 - Vicegrip, Seismic Toss, Bind, Focus Energy

Rock - I really like Kabutops' eventual skill set, though being Rock/Water seems kind of a hassle and Onix is my Strength Pokémon, so I think I'll need it for the final dungeon before the Final 4 anyways...

Onix - Lvl 40 - Strength, Rock Slide, Rage, Screech

Kabutops - Lvl 40 - Slash, Scratch, Absorb, Harden

Electric - Pikachu (der) - Lvl 52 - Thunder, Thunderbolt, Slam, Light Screen
Grass(/Poison) - Venusaur - Lvl 40 - Razor Leaf, Tackle, Leech Seed, Poisonpowder
Ice(/Water) - Lapras - Lvl 40 - Ice Beam, Body Slam, Water Gun, Confuse Ray
Ground - Marowak - Lvl 41 - Thrash, Headbutt, Bone Club, Focus Energy
Flying(/Normal) - Pidgeot - Lvl 40 - Wing Attack, Gust, Quick Attack, Sand-Attack
Psychic - Mew - Lvl 52 - Psychic, Mega Punch, Metronome, Softboiled
Ghost(/Poison) - Haunter - Lvl 45 - Dream Eater, Night Shade, Hypnosis, Confuse Ray

So, anybody got any ideas maybe for who I should choose? See any weaknesses maybe in those that I have that could be helped with a specific one of those that I can't choose among?

I'd definitely go with Charizard, in this group - he's the most diverse of them all and, if you trade it to one of the Johto games, you could teach him Dragon Rage or Hyper Beam and then trade him back.

Out of these, I'd go with Gyarados. I've found that Gyarados is really good in terms of TM's - it can learn quite a wide range of abilities through TM's, most notably, Thunderbolt [obtained from Lieutenant Surge in Vermillion City]. With that, you have Dragon, Electric and Water attacks - if you ever trade Gyarados into a Johto game, you have a Dark attack, too. If you really fancy a change, though, Blastoise is the best choice.

Hmm, I never tend to pick a fighting Pokémon for my team but, from these, I'd go with Primeape. I think, overall, his stats are better than Hitmonlee's. On top of this, he can learn both punching and kicking attacks - the only thing you're missing is an actual Fighting-type attack.

I was going to argue for Nidoqueen but, if you're adamant to have one of these two, I'd actually go for Muk. His defense is far better and, with Minimize, he can put up quite a fight. Investing in some stat-boosing items might just make him formidable enough to exceed Nidoqueen. Nidoqueen is also disadvantaged in the Pokémon league, due to its ground-type nature.

I can't decide between the two - I've never really followed through with training a Bug-type. However, I'd probably go with Butterfree - it's the most diverse and could last the longest.

From these, I'd pick Kabutops. The mixture of its types makes it quite formidable and narrowly receives a super-effective strike.

Anyway, outside of these examples, my team never seems to be very much different and it's not all too different to your own. Note that I'm base my teams on the best team possible to use when battling the Pokémon league - in other words, a single team that has a wide range of types so that every Pokémon I'll come up against can be taken down with a Super Effective attack.

Dragonite [essential for me] - Hyper Beam + and Ice, Dragon and Flying attack.
Charizard - Flamethrower and Wing Attack + anything else.
Gyarados - Hydro Pump, Bubblebeam, Dragon Rage and Thunderbolt.
Mew - Psychic, Metronome + anything else appropriate.
Pikachu - Thunder, Thunderbolt, Body Slam and Quick Attack.
Anything else appropriate - most likely either Alakazam or Gengar, sometimes Lapras.

I admit I'm a charizard fan, but I'd only consider him if you could wait until he learns Flamethrower or Fire Blast or something. But be careful with learning only fire blast--you only get 8 uses of it at most. The downfall to using charizard is that you leave yourself open to his weakness against electricity and rock attacks because he's also a flying type.

I also prefer flamethrower over fire spin, and if I'm not mistaken, Ninetales is faster than Flareon, so I'd pick Ninetales for now.

Same problem with Gyarados. Granted, he really is a great pokemon, but water and flying spells doom when going against electricity. Not that you'd ever get that match up, but don't forget that he's also weak against rock too. I'd also wait until you teach it Hyper Beam--then maybe it would be better. But I'd pick Blastoise. His attacks are fairly decent and his stats are generally strong too. Unfortunately, none of the water pokemon except maybe Vaporeon are particularly fast.

I'm afraid I'm not particularly familiar with fighting pokemon. They're normally quite easily beaten by pychic pokemon, and I use them a lot. Although I think I'd go with Hitmonlee because he's faster. Attack wise, I can't really say much about that.

Well, I don't know about this either--I don't use poison pokemon much because they just suck in my opinion. Although I think I'd pick Muk for Minimize. Although I don't know how useful that will be because he's not all that fast.

Butterfree, hands down. Poisonpowder and Sleep Powder are useful, and Psybeam works pretty well.

Yes, I was just going to say that about Kabutops. And Onix has better special attacks anyways, so I would pick Onix.

Well, since you've gotten Mew for the psychic type and Haunter, it's not like you really need to worry about it much. With just psychic alone, you can take out Bruno easily, and Agatha's ghost pokemon are ghost types with poison, so they're also easily destroyed. Although I think Lance's pokemon are around level 60 or so, which might actually be the problem.

Lance can be taken down almost entirely with Ice attacks, though - Dragons are weak against Ice, as are flying types. Dragonite doesn't stand a chance against that and neither does Aerodactyl. Gyarados isn't so tough when you're fighting him.

Gyarados is easily destroyed with electricity. Flying is weak against electricity and so is water. A deadly combination. You could be at a low level, and still cause tremendous amounts of damage with an electric attack.

The problem is with speed if your pokemon aren't at high enough levels. If you can't get in a hit, then you're as good as dead.

Based on the Pokémon League, though, the only thing that can use an electric attack is Dragonite - as I recall, Lance possesses three, one of which has Thunderpunch. However, with any of the above formidable compositions, Gyarados could be sacrificed or, more simply, recalled, and replaced with something possessing an Ice-type attack.

Well, the good thing with electric pokemon is they're fast. So you could bring out Gyarados pretty quickly if Lance doesn't switch.

Wow, thanks you two! I didn't even know if I'd get any replies at all! >_>

But, no, I didn't mean make my final six...I was just trying to make a group of one for each Type...I haven't gotten through a Pokemon game yet (various reasons) so I wasn't even really sure what League Pokemon I'd be going up against, really...

Oh, and I'm definitely not done leveling them, which is the main reason for the thread in the first place...Cause I don't want to continue to level so many of them...Although, until I actually get to the League, I realized I'd have to use Onix for Strength and Blastoise for Surf...unless I gave one of those to someone else as well...
