Bit too complex? It was easy.

VIII/X-2/XII had the best ability system. From what I gather with this new one for XII, only one character can have a set job. How is that any good? Apparently, you can't change jobs when you choose them - you choose one, you're done for the game. Bit backwards eh? You even had more variance in X/X-2/V with jobs and such. III too - you could change. Heck, TA too!

I'm finding this info out from a thread on EOFF. It comes across as being a rubbish version of X-2's system.

Here's the more important info I found:

Quote:
The big one, the addition of the job system. The jobs are: White mage, black mage, red mage, time mage, knight, monk, breaker, shikaree, uhlan, samurai, engineer and archer.

--- Shikaree uses light armor and daggers, uhlan uses spears, samurai uses katanas, breaker uses hammers, time mage can apparently use crossbows, and monk has the barehanded augments in addition to licenses for wooden poles.

- It was impossible to change jobs once they were chosen in the demo. It remains to be seen whether there will be a method to change jobs in the final version or not. UPDATE: More sources are saying that you cannot change your job once it is chosen.
It's a rather backward format. One job, and that's it?

In fact, let me link you to the whole thread.

Back to some other stuff - VIII's was awesome. People who complained about magic going should take advantage of some of the things you could learn from summon abilities. X-2's - changing jobs in battle to suit needs? Amazing. XII's - far less complicated and boring then X's SG.

VII's - offered nothing really. Nothing unique. I get more out of VI (Esper magic), V (Having set jobs but mixing ablities) and III (where you could change jobs, not in battle, but you could change them to suit needs. Like, an early prototype version of V's system).

IX's was alright. Didn't stand out for me.

The materia system was brilliant, even though I never paid much attention to it's sideffects, e.g. certain materia will reduce your vitaly by one etc...
But to be honest I was a fan of most of them, except IX. Wasn't a fan of that at all!
As for FFXII, I hated the licence systme to start off, now I think it's fantastic.

For me it was a tie between VIII, X, and X-2.
As much as I hated FFVIII, it did introduce a new battle concept. I liked being able to junction summons and magic to my character's statistics.
FFX was a fun new concept, seeing as that you could develop your characters in any direction that you so desired.
And believe it or not, I did love the job system in X-2...lame as that game was.

FFVII isn't a favorite, but I do think that junctioning magic to your weapons is fun too...

I think a combination of the four would make for a great battle and abilities system.

my best liked would be IX bcoz it's just simple but fun. it's like an enhanced system of FFI. this time your characters have their own personalities and individual abilities so choosing your party is like choosing jobs to start with in FFI.

my least like would be VIII bcoz it got me bored. again. though I want to try playing it again and see how challenging it is.

Yeah, I had that problem with VIII first time round - I thought the system was abysmal, but when I played it again, I put effort into using it

It helps to play FFVIII a few times and playing Triple Triad for refining the items into magic. I'm just off disc 1 and so far Quezacotl, Siren, Shiva and Ifrit have learned everything. Managed to beat Seifer in 1 hit and Edea in 7. Yeah I think I might have over levelled. I also thought it was a nice touch with some of the status increases you learned of the GF's. I know FFVI Espers had a similar system but with magic.

Anyway I don't think FFVIII's system is that bad. At first I did find it a bit complicated but it is fun once you adjust to that and learning to do that is part of the game.

Kain, have you looked at the stuff I posted about XII's zodiac system?

I liked them all going all the way back to #2 USA. Favorites though are Materia and Sphere Grid, which seems to be the common consenus. However I did like the Junction system. It was fun for me, you could get pretty customized. Junctioning Pain to your attack was just devastating.

Yeah. I know it probably doesn't appeal to everyone but I think it is a nice touch they have done with the License Board. Everyone won't be the same but the player still has the choice of what he wants to make that person's job. I haven't read that much on the Zodiac system but I'm guessing that you pick one job for each character and cannot change (Unlike FFIII & FFV) but I think that could be part of the challenge of picking good jobs for the party. I'm also wondering if more than one character can pick the same job or not (i.e. having 2 warriors). I think that would be suitable but if it is only one job per character then that's more of a challenge I guess.

Overall, I am liking the Zodiac system. I already thought the License Board was good (better than Sphere Grid) and that it only needed a few extra bits.

Darn. Well, I still think it's incredibly backwards. Still not keen on the whole Jobs thing overall - FFXII could have been jobless, but no, it wasn't.
