The only reason why I don't put any other FF game up there is because most of the other games really were far fetched. For instance, FFVI and FFIX were very fantasy oriented. And FFVIII was very science fiction/fantasy...
The events in FFVII were just "real" somehow.

Final Fantasy VII did have a lot of light hearted and colourful characters/moments too though, so whereas some parts of the game were rather sinister, that doesn't really go for the game as a whole. Surely Nifelheim and Midgar were dark places, but Costa Del Sol and The Golden Saucer weren't really. FF VII also had a very colourful cast with a lot of funny characters on both sides.
In my opinion Final Fantasy Tactics is the darkest game of the series. There's no comical relief characters, no tourist resorts, no wisecracking main characters or any of that stuff. Only war, deceit, murder, poverty, and religion gone horribly wrong.
