I'd say Squall up until he started being all half socially acceptable and started spewing his feeling for that Rinoa woman.

Also Cecil is pretty badass...but I dunno that Paladin garb didn't really convince me, it made me think of him more as a pretty boy prince.

I used to feel exactly the same way, but then I played CC and I gained a ton of respect for the guy. I mean he was experimented on and got sick from it, he couldn't even walk! When he came to he found his friend dying and telling him to basically take over for him.

Is it his fault that he took him literally?

Anyway, most bad ass lead for me goes to Rudy Roughnight... hehe.

But seriously if spin-offs count Zack hands down. And if not - Zidane.

If that's true about Zack telling Cloud to take over for him, that's just another example of SE screwing things up from VII. I remember quite distinctly that in VII Cloud took Zack's identity and pretended to be a SOLDIER so that he wouldn't have to be embarrassed by not actually reaching that class.

Its not that he couldn't reach the class he was afraid of rejection and didn't try. He didn't pretend to be SOLDIER, he was fully capable of being one, was infused with Jenova cells and thus had the glowing eyes of a SOLDIER and to top it off he killed sephiroth in a grunts outfit and woke up in a SOLDIER outfit holding Zack's sword.

CC tells you the parts Cloud wasn't mentally checked in for, thats not so horrible is it?
