I find sleep, confuse and slow good at warding of enemies when your nearly dead or their is just to many. I would use it on a boss as a last ditch attempt at healing my party. I usually do a haste on party/slow on enemies combo when their speed was crippling my party.

I find things like poison and doom to be more pointless than anything else. Poison is only useful when an enemy is near death and doom only works on weak enemies. I remember casting it on a fiend in X only to discover that it would tale 256 turns for it to die!

As for the positive effects: Regen, Protect and Shell, I'd only really use them at the start of a game to make weak characters last longer.

In FF1/2 status spells are necessary. Any other game, I'm fine without them. Except VI's quick

I'm not sure if I ever used sleep in FFXII or any any other FF game...and if I did there must have been a major reason I did so. I've never been into the whole status effect thing unless I found it 100% necessary to do so...like when I'm nearly dead. Although, half the time I just let myself die

On low level games, and No Sphere Grid FFX, Sleep is pretty essential for getting through the game. Since magic doesn't usually wake a character up, you can put it to sleep with something like Rikku's Use ability throwing Dream Powder then drop a load of spells. Makes the monster capture a heck of a lot easier when you're not constantly reviving your characters.

Sleep spell can be useful in some tight situations. Like in Henne Mines, when you get chased by lvl 60+ horde of monsters its always good to Sleepga them so you can run away safely

Apart from in FFX I tend not to use skills that inflict sleep and even in X I prefer Stone/Darkness/Poison moves to sleep. Only time I went out of my way to use Sleep was in VIII where I attached it to Squall's weapon when fighting those bastard T-Rex's but it does have it's uses if you go and use them.

But the guy sounds like he doesn't use them anyway which of course that makes them useless. And his comments about cheapening victories is just loltastic.

I find sleep the most useful of the status magic, I remember I used it on the T- rex on FFVIII, I think I had it equipped on attack, not sure right now.

Also blind is another good status attack, the rest I never really used.

The sleep status can be useful but as a previous member said (forget which member) It can rob someone of the accomplishment that would be good if the sleep status wasn't around

I never really used the Sleep status effect except in FFTA and FFVIII. I don't find it useless for surely it could be used in a smart plan, but I just like making battles go as quickly as possible. If Sleep is attached to my weapon (like in FFVIII), then I could put it on no problem, but since it doesn't work on bosses or anything, I typically stray from it.

You aren't forced to use it so why complain? Also the whole 'cheapens the victory' thing is bollocks. Using any sort of status changing move on an enemy is a strategic move with the intent of giving you an advantage over something that's trying to kill you. Is it slightly cheap Possibly. But then I suppose other forms of magic and summons can be deemed unfair too if you really want to go into it.
