I haven't seen any thorough theories on this yet, so I decided to write up what most likely will be his name.

I think his name will be
SOMNUS
Reason for this?
Well so far we have actually found out the title of the song played in the background of the Versus trailer is called Somnus Nemuri. Nemuri is a japanese word for sleep, but what about Somnus?

Somnus, is the roman god of sleep and according to Wikipedia "his palace was a dark cave where the sun never shines." Does that ring a visual bell? Look at where the main character sits, and he is even sleeping.

Now Squaresoft has a great tradition of bringing in names and legends from different mythologies around the world. So far, Greek, Arabian and Norse mythology has been covered very well. Now it seems they will use this name for the main character.

The main character which I will now call Somnus. Seems to be based on the real Somnus. We have read translations that from another not yet public trailer, that a voice in Somnus' head says "wake from your sleep".

So here we got a real dark fellow, sitting all alone on his throne of darkness, sleeping.

The real Somnus from the mythology was also portrayed with wings on his head several times. We can see the dude has got some crazy hair again, but that's just Nomura, but we know he can fly according to the not seen trailer, or teleport that is. And this just embraces the image of Somnus.

Lastly Somnus image was always used to illustrate death, and this is were all symbolism boils down to make sense. A cave of darkness, loneliness, the sleeping character, it clearly illustrates the underground of society. In the bible this is basically hell, but I'm not going to go as far as saying Somnus is the devil.

However, we also know that Pulse and Coocoon are the two worlds. The one up in the sky which is like heaven, and the other is below on the planet, bothered by many crystals creating monsters. Violence roars around here so obviously, it can be somewhat related to hell.

If I'm right about this, we will also probably see other characters be named accordingly to the mythology. Those names are: Thanatos, Nyx, Morfeus and Endymion. Which basically, sounds like your typical cast of Final Fantasy characters.

I have no reason to try to convince you. You obviously haven't payed attention to the news.

Second of all, I clearly state that this is a theory, so what do I need sources for, this is what I think and what is probably a good bet taking many things into consideration.

Third of all, since you don't follow the news, you probably didnt hear about the extended version of the Versus trailer, where they show that Somnus teleported himself up on the roof, and that he was awoken by a voice in his head, and that he uses telekinesis to move his many weapons to where he wants them to take action.

I would like he will be named so, cuz I'm a very studious on the Mythology, but I'm afraid SQUARE finally will put a stupid-simple name with no history-meaning like Vaan (desambiguation of the netherlander's lastname "Van"), Tidus (desambiguation of Tifus), Zidane (the same name of the superstar football-player) or the worst of all...Cloud (....a cloud...like.....a "cloud"....).
So I bet they're going to put him "Butsh" or "Bred Patt".
It will be a very good change if Nomura puts mythologycal gods names.

[Somnus mean in Latin "sleep" (the feeling, not the action) and his greek name was Hipnos; Somnus (hipnos) is related to death for his twin brother, Tanatos. That symbolizes the similarity between Death and sleepness]

I think it'll be named after a natural phenomena sort of thing.

I was reading something about final fantasy once, and it was pointed out that all the main characters main names were after NP's.

Cloud, Tidus, Squall (don't know what that is though), Zidane (same as Squall). And I'm guessing Vaan is some sort of NP too.

I'll take a guess and say Hurricane.

A Squall is a sudden gust of wind. Zidane is a French soccer player. VAAN is the acronym of the scientific name of some blueberry. Yup, sounds like natural phenomena to me.
